Luke Kolin informed Air France Virtual and Delta Virtual Airlines senior staff that he intends to retire as the Vice President of Technology by December 31, 2012. His family and professional career as a software developer have grown to the point that time pressures require a change. This is a significant development since Luke is the founder starting Delta Virtual Airlines eleven years ago. He daily performs many key roles, Chief Technology Officer, Web Developer, Server Administrator, Fleet Manager and ACARS developer. His dedication, hours of service, financial support and input over the 11 years are immeasurable. The result is the world's largest virtual airline and enjoyable experiences for more than 11,000 virtual aviators that passed through our halls.

Kudos Luke for your accomplishments and thank you for creating an organization that brings enjoyment to many.

A joint meeting of Senior Staff from Air France Virtual and Delta Virtual Airlines met this past Tuesday to create a plan to fill the opening. A combined team consisting of two IT professionals and staff members Brian Hankey of Air France Virtual and George Lewis of Delta Virtual Airlines was created. They will prepare position descriptions and receive applications by e-mail. Their initial focus is to fill the Chief Technology Officer position; however should candidates suitable for the other four roles listed above be found they would be considered too.

Succession planning to assure survivability began in 2005 with the recoding of the website and locating the site on a commercial server. Measures continued over the time period to assure duplicity and continuous service. A disruption of service is not expected, but there are no guarantees. Luke assures us that he will be available for consultation and emergencies should they arise.

Should you have questions or concerns please inform senior staff. Obviously, if you have talents in any of the areas, please email Brian and George, their email address can be found on the Staff Roster.

You have made history Luke. What you have accomplished within the VA arena, in my humble opinion, packs just as much gravity within the flight simulation world as Peter Dawson's work with FSUIPC. You set a standard & established a pace among VA's that is extremely difficult to exceed, let alone catch or duplicate. Your presence, skill, talent, knowledge, expereince, and passion for excellence will be sorely missed. You are the Yoda, Jedi Master of Virtual Airlines, "Do or do not, their is no try...", and you did it in a VERY BIG WAY because you believed!! Your commitment to this organization taught us to believe in ourselves and gave us a place to excell, learn, achieve and make life long friendships. That is a gift that none of us past, present, or future will ever be able to truly repay you for... I'm sure all of our pilots & ground support staff here at DVA will join me is saying that as you push back from the gate for the final time we wish you the best of luck in all your future adventures & endeavors, and blue skies to you & your family!!

This is shocking and sad, but you've made the right decision Luke. Words can't describe what you've done for us and I don't know that DVA will ever be the same... Don't stay away too long and poke your head in every once in a while to say hi. I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavours.

I've been here at DVA on and off now for 8 years now. And it is hard to imagine this VA without Luke. What he has done is simply amazing. From back in 2004 when DVA was at the forefront then to the powerhouse it is today, I don't believe it would have been possible without Luke. As others have said, there really aren't the words available to really say how much thanks we owe you for all of the work you have put into this VA. While it sounds lame, seriously thank you for everything. I do hope you stick around at least as a pilot, because then you haven't really left.

Two and a half years ago I discovered virtual airlines for the first time. I picked DVA off a list at VATSIM, took a peek inside and I have been here ALMOST EVERY DAY since. I am still amazed at all the fantastic support utilites here for communicating, tracking, accrediting, and educating sim pilots and RW pilots as well. As a senior who suffers a little from attention deficit I love the structure, the challenges, the toys, bells, and whistles here at DVA because it helps me to maintain focus and concentration. It is very unusual for me to be this involved in anything. Thanks for ALL that Luke, your talents have provided countless hours of enjoyment for me and truly made a contribution to my life. I would also like to thank ALL the staff, past and present, for building and maintaining DVA. Thank you all.

These tributes of appreciation which continue to pour in speak volumes. I just want to extend my gratitude for envisioning, creating, and maintaining this amazing operation that has kept me coming back for more over the past seven years. Your dedication and support for this wonderful website and its family is nothing short of remarkable and the passion which you have exhibited is without question.

This VA will no doubt go on, but it won't be the same without you watching over it. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

I want to say a heartfelt thankyou for all you've done for DVA, AFVA and myself personally- with all your systems you have helped improve over the years, being always prepared to listen and help and come up with some amazing tech which has, I believe, made GVA the best out there by far, where anybody can enjoy their flightsimming regardless if they are just starting or are the most serious, hardcore simmer there is or somewhere in between, enjoying what we like-flying-it's hard getting such a balance, but your tech has made this possible. All this tech and help over the period I have been with GVA has turned me from a pilot who knew very little when I started to where I am now- having the opportunity helping our pilots who are the core of our VA, all due to your amazing work behind the scenes. I'll miss you Luke, but I do understand where you're coming from-I'd have done the same. Please do fly with us when you can- we'd really like that! All the best for your future.

WOW! I gotta say it's a sad day when he leaves. What he built is like nothing else in the VA world. I wish Luke the best. He will be a success at anything he does. HUGE shoes to fill. It will take multiple people to do what he did himself daily. That itself says it all. The ACARS is without doubt the best in the business. Thanks for everything you have done for not only the VA but for simmming.

Luke,

Every now and then you meet an individual that stands out and towers above others in life. That calmly and often silently provides leadership, guidance and development to so many others. We all hear the names in the real world of dynamic leaders and visionaries, the Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Andy Grove, and many others like minded individuals that we may ourselves personally aspire to emulate. In this list of names in the virtual world of flight, there is no one that more closely aligns himself with these examples of leadership visionaries, more than our own Luke Kolin.

I have been around the cooler and staff offices for many years, in many staff capacities with DVA. I have worked with Luke and bounced ideas and thoughts off him for years; some came to fruition, others were always generously considered.

I suppose I am still in shock to even think of Luke not being around on a regular basis; being in front of and/or behind the scenes constantly improving the integrity of our technology or the integrity of the ideals of who and what we represent at DVA. I will miss him greatly. He leaves tremendous shoes to be filled. I remind myself that he conceptualized DVA and worked with Terry to make it the envy of the virtual world of flying.

DVA is about leadership and there are many here on staff that I have worked closely and learned to respect their dedication and to literally see that they and I have found ourselves to mirror the attributes that Luke has brought to this VA.

Luke, I wish you all the very best in all you do . . . you will be greatly missed, but, then again, I imagine that our VA is in your heart and soul and we’ll still hear the echo of your ideas and influences on those that follow in your shoes.
God Bless.

Luke I would like to say than you. I feel as if that is an insult in a way. This airline introduced me to what started as a hobby and turned into a passion. I raised my family on this airline, I cannot tell you how many times I stayed up at night and flew while rocking a sick baby. I have grown to love all the pilots as well as the staff for making me a well rounded aviator. Than you for making my life better and making my love of aviation not just a thought but an actual hands on dream.

Tonight I will hold a glass up high and toast your career to this wonderful airline.
Clear skies and smooth sailing my friend.

Luke,

thanks for all the hard work, service, dedication. You and all the team progressively transformed DVA into a powerful "tool". I remember how amazed i was (i still am) when i discovered DVA 3 years ago, it was exactly what i was looking for, a Document library, fleet library, check rides to test me, ACARS, a true organisation. The level of detail put on each document, from the flight encyclopedia to aircraft AOM is awesome. I spent hours and hours reading my aircraft AOM, trying to know every single part of my aircraft, how to properly operate her (i still do, you never know it all). I learned so much new things, improved my virtual flying skill and a lot more, all of that because of all the hard work you and all the staff members (and Pilots) did over the years. You "via DVA" no doubt are one of Virtual Airline pioneers. Once again thanks.

Blue Skies.

I hate goodbyes. I really do but Luke, you will always be remembered through what you have started and what you have done for the virtual world. I may just be a member of AFVA now for a couple of months only but I believe, years will pass by and I will never forget to thank you for starting and leaving this virtual airline for us to enjoy! Always be safe! Goodluck!

Luke, I hope that as you move on from DVA/AFV to the next phase of whatever you do in life, you look back at what you've done here, and at the thousands of people that you've provided such enjoyment through your hard work, and take some pride in it. It's justified.

Godspeed, my friend. Best of luck in whatever your next projects are!

Luuuuuuuuke! The force has been with you and no doubt will continue to be. ACARS alone is a fantastic testament to your contribution to DeltaVA. You deserve a CHEERS! from all of us and it looks like from this thread you are receiving it. You'll probably never get all of the way down to my comment but I don't care. Best wishes in your endeavors with your family and work.
There is one thing I'd like to see. One last flyin from everyone at DVA to the airport of your choice, an all day event on the day of your choice with the entire US airspace fully staffed.

Cheers!

Sad to hear but I am well familiar with the struggle to balance a real world job and family responsibilities with being part of a virtual airline. My one question though is will the website ever be updated? for example, the logo at the top right of the webpage shows the 767 in the older Delta livery. It would be nice "as a parting gift" it give the website a nice facelift smile

You're using the legacy user interface. If you go into the pilot center and edit your profile, you'll see a dropdown list near the bottom, just above your exam history. Select "Delta 2007" and the new logo shows the current livery.

Thankyou for bringing an opportunity to enjoy what some of us can't do in real world, but represents a very important subject in our life, and its a sort of escape scenario from our normal activities. I've loved flying and airplanes since I was a little kid, and through dva I've gotten closer to a dream that has always been, and will always be present.

Best of luck Luke!

It has been a very sad feeling in my heart since the day I first read this that Luke is retiring. I too have tried out other VA's out there, and None can compare to DVA! It's hard to imagine DVA without Luke. But real life sometimes calls on us to take other avenues and I wish you the best of luck out there in the real world!
