Delta’s cutbacks leave questions at Memphis International

Despite this week’s bad news, the fortunes of Memphis International Airport as a Delta Air Lines hub remain closely linked with Delta’s flagship hub at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The Atlanta-based airline announced a 25 percent cut in Delta flights at Memphis International, which amounts to an 8-10 percent cut in capacity based on the number of seats on those flights.

Hope were not going down the same road at MEM, as we did with CVG. Cant really say I didnt expect this, althought having flown through MEM RW two times in the past couple weeks its still a very busy airport. I guess you have to remeber the proximity of MEM and ATL, both being hubs.

This is by and large fueled by the expedited retirement of the DC9-50. There will be back-fill in MSP by Compass and Republic (Shuttle America) 170s and 175s but Memphis won't be seeing much if any of this new flying contract.

The CR2 (no offense to anyone in the program) is killing the station because of how crappy the plane's dispatch reliability has been and how inefficient it is. Plus, many frequent MEM flyers avoid the CR2 like a fatal plague.

Yes, but many of the flights I find myself on in a CRJ (I fly out of KMEM alot) used to be turbo props. I can recall flying to places such as KXNA (NW Arkansas) several times in a turbo prop trying to land that Wal-mart account. Now it's a CRJ. I'll take the CRJ anyday.

Granted, the CR2 is better than a J31/32... but I'd take a SF3 over the CR2 any day.

Comfort wise, the SF3 may pull ahead of the CRJ (2-1 seating versus 2-2) but the turbo-prop perception will always be a hindrance to the public. Compound that with the severe weight restrictions of the SF3. Granted, the CR2 has its own issues in that arena but many times, the SF3 will dispatch with four or 5 seats blocked due to fuel and checked bags. This was a major reason why DL is getting rid of them.

I remember one flight to KXNA where we had a strong north wind, we were generally headed in a WNW direction and the turbo prop just fought it the entire flight. It was almost like being in an old tire swing the entire flight (back-and-forth, back-and-forth...).

As slow as the ATR was, it got the job done. I never remembered her going out weight restricted. DL's (ASA really) configuration was 66 seats with the way they had the aft galley set up. Many times the thing would go out completely full plus 50-60 bags split between the forward and aft bins. The only issue was HHH (due to the RWY) and MOB. They started sending them to Mobile towards the end of the ATR's life and it would always go out restricted on IROP days with a max booking of 60 to be able to carry as much bags as possible.
