I didn't want to step on Skylars thread. I have the same rig and overclocked to 3.8 GHz (thank you YouTube). Maybe I shouldn't have done that. How do I monitor the temperature? eek

I use this... notice it only displays the digitally-measured temps. Don't let the CPU go above 60°C, or it'll shorten its life. And also, the guarantee is void if you overclock it, right?

It all depends on the waranty.

I got my rig built for OCing and and it came with a waranty that covered ocing up to x ammount above standard.

To check my speeds and timings I use: CPU-Z
http://www.cpuid.com/

To check GFX and CPU temps I use: Real Temp
http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/

I could be off base with this, but I think the Intel warranty will cover your processor as long as you keep the core voltage within their specs. And their stock voltage at least for my processor was well below the max voltage they had listed. Of course if you melt the thing they aren't going to cover it.

hmmmm what should my CPU be at OC'd to 4.2Ghz? I see it about 74C atm, Highest Core temp 88C at times -- under load of course. I think I need to tweak the fan though it's not doin good enough

74C for a non-loaded temp is crazy high in my opinion and I would not leave it at 88 for any amount of time. The highest I let me quad core get was 75, and that was with my stock cooler. With my new cooler, under load and overclocked, I don't get above 60 usually.

What kind of thermal compound did you use?

Whatever it came with lol. I didn't put much of the machine together myself, had a buddy of mine do it (he insisted lol).

I haven't actually modified the fan speed yet, so I'll restart and do that -- and the temp is under fsx for 2 hrs so i'd call it a high load.

Our recommendation is to keep Intel Core i7 CPUs under 80C. That gives you a healthy margin in case you’re running a heavy load on your CPU on a particularly hot summer day. Due to the manufacturing process of Intel Core i7, and the improved power management features, we’re comfortable at up to 80C, even though this would be considered a very hot temperature with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU.

I guess the I7's are a little different, but 88 still seems high.

At this exact Moment:

System: 54C
CPU: 80C
AUX -4C
HD0 37C
Core 0: 89C
Core 1: 84C
Core 2: 70C
Core 3: 68C
Core 4: 72C

I need to bump the main fan up, which is acting as the intake for the H50.

Yea I let my CPU fan run at max all the time. Its 120MM so its not too noisy.

What voltage are you running for that speed. You can try backing down the voltage and see if it remains stable and that will bring down the temps

Well in my gigabyte motherboard, there was a setting for auto fan control, i just disabled that and it bumped it up to 100%. That was for my stock, for my new one, there is a nob that controls is.

sigh what a pain -- it only has "Standard" "Silent" or "turbo" but no actual way to set it to 100% in the Bios.. what a pain! lol

I just wired my case fans directly into the power connectors so they run all the time, and I use Real Temp 3.00 to monitor temps on each CPU and GPU. I heard if you overclock it's better to have the fans running all the time anyway and it makes sense to me 'cause fans cost a lot less than CPUs smile

I would take the H50 off and clean and re-apply some Arctic Silver 5 then re-install it and see if that helps out. Other than that if you are going to try for that kind of OC then you need to go with the Noctua NH-D14 or real water cooling. Here is a great review on the NH-D14 that also shows your H50 http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1212/6/ I agree you need to stay under 80c when flying and below 90c when running Prime95 or OCCT with the i7, anything more and you are taking a bigger risk. In addition what are your vCore settings? You may be able to back it out a bit and stay stable and thus bring your temps down a little.
