I have scheduled Sunday, January 16th, 2011 as the date for this year's new PC Build. I am sharing this information with all of you as a point of reference (only). My parts are ordered and on the dining room table waiting be assembled. I am not trying to open a discussion about "you should have done this, or I prefer that." After much research and input from trusted DVA members (you know who you are) this is simply the system and components I settled on. Again, I am posting this here as an aid for any of you considering a PC build in the future. Both your results and preferences may vary...and that is OKAY! P.S. I am not a PC Guru by any means and there are many members at DVA who have extensive experience in this area. You should seek them out for guidance as I did.
TOWER (Case): Coolermaster HAF 932 Blue
CPU: Intel i7-960 @ 3.2 GHz
GPU: EVGA nVidia GTX 470 - Superclocked
MOBO: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R onboard acceleration (USB 3.0) SLI Ready LGA 1366
PSU: Corsair HX 1000 Watt Power Supply
MEDIA Drive: HP bd240i - Blue Ray DVD/CD/CD-ROM, DVD-R/CD-R reader/writer Combo Drive with Lightscribe
HDD
(Operating System): One (1) 428 Gb Western Digital Velociraptor at 10,000 RPM (OS: Windows 7 64-Bit)
SSD: Crucial 128 Gb Solid State Drive (FSX only)
RAM: 8 Gb (4 x 2) G.Skill Ripjaws RAM (posting in dual channel configuration initially, may move to tri-channel later, we'll see) I am going to run this for a month before and anticipated transition to 12 Gb's of Corsair Dominator RAM in tri-channel config.
CPU Cooler: One CoolIT ECO-120 Advanced Liquid Colling System ( for overclocking of the CPU)
Construction Note: The HAF 932 comes with a rear 140 mm fan. The 120mm fan/radiator combo of the CoolIT CPU cooler is going into the space and fortunately HAF designed the case with additional premade 120mm screw holes. One additional 120mm Coolermaster fan was also purchased and will be mounted on the opposite side of the CoolIT radiator (as recommended by that company) for a push/pull air flow predicted to have up to an additional 8 degree (celcius) downward temp affect on the chip. This remains to be seen, but come on the 120mm fan was like $12 bucks...why not. This will be my FSX PC only. I am keeping my current system for FS9 flying as well and for all my personal computing needs.
If this helps you in any way, or gives you food for thought while thinking about doing it yourself, then my mission is complete. There are alot of companies who will give you this very same rig...only for a few thousand extra dollars worth of their time.

Thanks Mike! I actually get pretty decent frames from the HP h8400F Media Center PC I am on now. Considering I am running a 2.2 Ghz processor on 6 Gigs of RAM, it is pretty decent with some tweaks. I am anxious to see how the new rig performs!

I guess your are the reason that Duke Power and Progress Energy are merging to be able to provide enough power to the Florida east coast to carry this rig... I believe the technician is really an under the table security guard to make sure no one takes your new rig!

Alan, actually I had forgotten all about that! It will save a ton of time migrating FSCommander, ASE, and all these other support programs I have accumulated along the way. Brilliant..and thanks. I have been so focused on one aspect of the project I failed to see the big picture possibility.
Scott, if anyone can get past him and take this rig without leaving a good amount of DNA behind, I wish them the best of luck. As his yard sign points out to potential interlopers..."I can make it to the fence in 2.5 seconds. Can you?"

Built yesterday! Running today (after hours of reinstalling FS add-ons!). I will post some in-progress shots of me and the other dummy putting it together. Turned on and posted correctly the first time, which means we got lucky. FSX has never looked to good. I just flew from SLC to LAS and got 60 fps. Sliders maxed...REX, UTX, GEX, QW757...not too shabby.

Brings back memories and a tear to my eye. Too bad I haven't flown in a long time. Too busy with the kids right now. Hopefully I'll be up in the virtual skies soon and we can link up for an MD-11 flight. One old CP and the current CP trying to figure out who Mark is.

Well, the verdict is just fine Ken. Even moderately overclocked to 3.7 I am averaging 35-40 fps in high traffic (heavy denssity areas) such as Imagine Sim ATL, FSDT JFK and LAS. That is running PMDG MD-11 virtual cockpit with ASE running. In stock FSX scenery 70-80 fps around the airfield, exceeding 100 fps at altitude (frame limiter set to unlimited in my config). Did you want pics of the build or some with the sim running? I'll be glad to share either.

I'd kind of be interested in seeing your FSX settings, my rig is pretty close to what you've got there (i7 950, 8gb corsair dominator, EVGA 470 SC, SSD boot drive, 1.2 TB raid 5).

Nice choices. Glad it's working well. I have been looking into building a very similar setup, so it's good to hear how it's working for you. Have you done in any overclocking on it? Are you planning to? Can you post some in game pics sometime so we can drool over them? MD-11 or L1011 pics please... since they are the best in the sky, and all. :-P

Guys I will get to that in short order. I am locked in mortal combat with my state's governor over my retirement benefits and it is going to he a heck of a fight.
