I have recently been thinking to myself, "what is golgotha?" I see it at the bottom of the screen (Golgotha v2.2) and on the left side (GOLGOTHA). Would somebody (preferably Luke) be able to tell me what Golgotha is?

Golgatha is an open source platform in which the DVA site is built off of. It is available for download if you wish from the Global Virtual Airlines Group link at the bottom of the page. It is like a "Joomla" or "PHP Nuke" type of thing. Just the platform from which the site is developed from.

What Trevor said. And yes, the reference is Biblical; Golgotha was another name for the hill upon which Jesus was crucified. I think it was Aramaic for "place of the skull."

The name of the web application and the name of our server are two little jokes I had with myself when putting things together. Both are biblical, but only one was intentionally so.

As Lewis points out, Golgotha was the name of the execution ground in Jerusalem where the crucifixion took place. At the time I started writing the "new" web application for DVA, I was struck by how few virtual airlines were ever able to write a "version 2.0" of their web site, and I remarked to myself that a new web site was where virtual airlines went to die. Hence, the execution site reference.

The other reference astute observers may note is the host name of our web server. In DNS, www.deltava.org maps to endor.gvagroup.org. While Old Testament readers may remember the Witch of Endor in one of the Books of Samuel, this is not the origin of the reference - it actually comes from the C.S. Forester book Flying Colours, and is the boat Horatio Hornblower uses to escape French captivity. In our case, it was the server we used to escape our prior hosting provider. (Who in fairness was very attentive and provided good service, just not for the volume we had.)

This is the second version of the website. This is called DVA2006 (I think) because it was planned for introduction in 2006. It actually got released in late 2005 (if I remember from reading it somewhere).
