I'm 52 yrs old.6 yrs ago,i was diagnosed with "sleep apnea",a sleep disorder..Needless to say,i wouldnt be ok to learn to fly in the real world..I'd doze once, and either stall out or dive in!
I'm on my 3rd VA since 2002..American Virtual Airlines (2000+ hrs),American Trans Air(580 hrs) and now here on DVA...
Anyone else with sleep apnea on here????

I just had a sleep study done, and I have a machine coming to me tomorrow with a person who is supposed to show me how to use it and remain comfortable..
But, anyhow, welcome to DVA! You will find that we surpass both of your former VA's by miles!

David, Welcome aboard. This has turned out to be a great VA for learning in my experience. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a few years back and have been using the machine since. It has made a world of difference to me. I had a severe case according to the sleep study with 100+ body movements an hour during the night preventing the REM sleep period. My symptoms were mostly afternoon headaches though, every day. The machine fixed this problem after a week of use. I never knew this existed until I gave into my wifes calls to go to the doctor. Anyway happy flying.

My sleep problem is that I grind my teeth for some reason hence I have slept with a mouth guard for several years. I also dream just about every night that I am flying on Vatsim. How popular is this dream?

Welcome Aboard!
Well, Scott, I actually ended up e-mailing one of the 737 staff asking why I hadn't been promoted because I had a dream I passed my checkride. And once I started daydreaming I was on final approach when I was shopping, and hit a woman with a shopping cart! I'm serious! This hobby really gets into your mind...

well lucky you scott! i wish i could have those dreams. unfortunately if i dream about flying, its usually about me flying real world in my 172 and getting cussed out by a controller for doing something stupid. i also dream about not being fully prepared for a flight and getting confused and scared. fortunately in the real world thats not the case.

welcome to the VA sir.. and.. well.. this is my way of realizing a dream too.. 38 father of 3.. with a mortgage and a great paying job. My dream airline captain.. but.. I work in IT. I cant take the paycut or the risk. This VA is seriously.. quite awesome.. the events. the certifications.. ACARS.. I have been to alot of VAs over the years.. there in my honest opinion isnt a better one. The benefit package here is insane.. and the people the people staff and otherwise are a blast.
get involved in some events. Have a blast.. and above all welcome. I think you will find this place to be anything you need it to be.

My dad has it...but thanks to the breathing machine that those with sleep apnea customarily use, you can get good sleep...If he wanted to get a pilot's license he could...doesn't affect him when he is awake...
