I spent some time today cursing at our new LDAP server, but I've managed to get it more or less working. Pretty much the last impediment to DVA2006 is complete. Next week, I will arrange to get our hosted server set up.
Our new LDAP server, which is used for authentication, gives me an interesting technical capability I have not had. I will actually be able to read your passwords. Instead of a password reset facility, I'll now have the ability to e-mail your password back to you.
Would you be interested in such functionality? Or for security reasons, do you like the current model?
Cheers!

I have no problem either. I'm sure nobody here would exploit the password system.

There is a valid concern about emailing passwords. The bare fact is that most people do use the same one or two passwords for most, if not all, their accounts. Just to be safe, my opionion is that password reset would the best route to take.

I think we should stick with the password reset. I use my passowrds for many different things....plus after it is reset you can go in and change it to wahtever you want.

I don't think you being able to view the passwords and emailing them to us would be a problem, so long as everyone has the oppurtunity to change thier passwords if they use theirs passwords for other things/sites than deltava. I too use my delta password for other things, although nothing that could truly effect me (anything where financial transactions are involved.) It does seem like this would somewhat increase your workload, though. Thats my two cents.

I would prefer the current system as others have said due to the fact of using the same password for various things.

Thanks for your feedback. Because I'm lazy, I'm not going to change things. We have a password reset system coded, and that's what we'll keep. On a security note, let me leave a warning - we are no longer going to be hosting things on a PC that I control, and the LDAP server will let sysadmins retrieve the password. Heck, my code will be able to, I'm just not going to do so.
So if you're using your DVA password for anything sensitive like your bank account, stockbroker or mortgage - please change it. I can make no guarantees as to the security of the password going forward with DVA2006. (Practically speaking, your password will most likely be safe - but I cannot guarantee it and I don't want the responsibility.)
Cheers!
