fulfilling the check ride..I for one dont use the SID & STAR routings..I use GPS.
I dont see anything wrong in completing a check ride by GPS..

would be nice if the powers that be would be flexible in this matter

The check rides are in place so people learn how to fly correctly, and prove that they are willing to put the time in to advance in their rankings. Technically, you can still use your GPS to fly the SID/STARS... until you reach the altitude that your check ride says you need to hand fly the rest of the way in.

Sure thing, you can use GPS until you need to handfly. Cheapskate me used GPS on all the check rides except for Stage 4 aircraft. IMHO, the CPs and ACPs were pretty flexible when it came to the use of A/P during check rides.

It depends on the checkride. Some choef pilots are more flexible than others. The purpose of the SIDs and STARS is so the chief pilot can tell if you are able to navigate proparly with the new aircraft.

David, you can fly any SID and any STAR using the GPS and VOR receivers that any of our fleet aircraft have as standard equipment. You must know how to fly a SID or STAR however to use these tools but you do not need an FMC. (Unless you want an RNAV procedure).

I do not use an FMC very much quite frankly. The only payware I have is the PMDG 737 and I have just started to use the FMC on that one. I do not use it on the L-1011 or even the B757.

Using "GPS direct" as a flight plan is not valid however in most cases on Vatsim but late at night you might get that approved.

Using a SID/STAR is both realistic, and part of the 737 checkride.
You must learn to fly one to do the CR.

AVSIM is loaded with SID/STAR waypoints for the default GPS. I know that two places that love to use the NAVAIDS on the SID/STAR is KLAS and KATL. Both of which are AVSIM able to be downloaded for the default GPS. Let me know if you need a hand getting these loaded into the appropriate files.
