My guess its a virus and the only way to remove it is via a virus scanner scanning through another computer, or you best but is to reformat your hard drive and start with a fresh install.

With the tiny amount of anecdotal symptoms you gave us it would be impossible to accurately diagnose. Ask a friend who knows about computers or take it to a repair shop. You need a knowledgeable person to sit down with your computer one on one. Obscure forum posts won't help you.

Run Hijack this
Google unknown software running on your computer
When you find the one that comes back as VIRUS
Start your computer is safe mode, delete the virus, done.

Most trojans and worms are really not that hard to overcome. Unless you're a rogue billionaire flight sim addict I highly doubt that serbian mobsters randomly targeted your rig for their evil plots. Just do some research, it can be fun smile

If your desktop is disconnected from 'enternet', how are you trying to log on. Sorry, I did not understand this. What account are you trying to log on.

Connor, I concur with the other posters. It is likely you have picked up a virus or some form of malware and without being able to look at the computer and run various diagnostic software it would be extremely difficult to pin down the problem from afar. Your best bet is to take it to a local professional.

take a look around newegg or tigerdirect..... Tomshardware is also a great place for some honest computer tech help..... when you say "cheap" what are you willing to spend?

If you buy a new computer, you're going to lose everything on the HDD anyway. If you put the HDD into a new PC, you'll still have the problem, because it's obviously OS related, not hardware related. Boot into safemode, or insert your Windows disk and reinstall your operating system/try system restore/try system repair.

Here is what you do, if it is a desktop, buy a new hard drive, install you OS and stuff on it, plug in your old hard drive as a slave and scan it to find the malicious software, if and when it is fixed pull files that you want from your old drive and put it on the new one and keep the old one as a spare.

unless the virus is in a file he downloaded -- then he may end up copying it over and infecting the new hdd.

A reformat and full re-install is really the only way to ensure your hard drive is clean and clear.

I'd also suggest a decent antivirus -- not any of that free stuff though -- really invest in an antivirus like Trend Micro, or others.

Once you install your new OS, before you transfer any files be sure to scan them. I also recommend Spybot for anti-spyware

Google HIREN boot CD or have someone burn you a copy (local computer techs will have this). It will boot to the CD and from the minimal XP shell you can run various virus scanners and malware removers (included on the CD).

This should help locate the issue and (hopefully) correct it.

Conner, send me an E-Mail. I put computers together for low income families that have high school age children. I'll see what I can help you with. I really don't do this but it sounds like it is the only PC that you have. smithdavidp@yahoo.com
