Good evening everybody. Recently I have check the NOTAMs , I notice there was a post notifying diversion , I have come up with a couple of questions. To make a diversion it's obvious there must be an event that's happening in the first intended airport of landing. Wheather it's nature's weather that's playing along or maybe some other factor(s). Say I plan a route from KMCO to KJFK , once I am close to JFK I notice weather is turning bad does that mean I can file KLGA as an alternate airport and still my PIREP will be approved? Or does it have to be a DVA route , such as KMCO - KBOS , because if KJFK is my intended airport of landing and KBOS is my alternate , I'd say that's pretty far diversion , causing more fuel , cause more money to the company. Please if someone can assisst me with this I'd gladly appriciated. Thank you.

Kelvin, LGA would be fine because DL serves La Guardia. Although, both airports are so close the weather would most likely be the same at both but that's not your question smile . The way staff prefers it, and the way I do it as well, land at your alternate and you may file a flight report if you're not going to be heading out to JFK right away. Be sure to put in the comment block that you diverted and for whatever reason. Your next flight should be LGA-JFK to complete the original flight and do the same as far as comments before you file.

It isn't totally necessary to do the follow on leg to JFK but it is prefered.

Yes, just be sure the alternate is a destination served by DL OR one of it's partners (can be a station serfed by KL, AS, etc. as long as it shows in the schedule from somewhere).
