We need more details as to what is actually happening for anyone to provide advice for you. If its anything serious, you are going to need someone onsite to probably help.

You have two options:

1) Reformat you computer, start from scratch.

2) Write down the "symptoms" your PC is showing, use screenshots, etc. Then go to this forum:
http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/index.php?showforum=18

Read the rules (especially the one that says "Hijacked Users" - Start here), make a new topic, post your symptoms and you HIJACKTHIS log, and someone with much more experience will help you get rid of it.

#1 will fix your issues .... turn off Universal Plug N Play after that, use Firefox browser (not IE), install a router between your computer and your cable/DSL modem, stay off explicit websites, do not open e-mail attachments unless you know the person ..... thats a good start

Really the only way you can stick a virus on your computer is by downloading something with said virus in it. Torrents/other shady websites etc. Your first bet is to watch what you do

Don't be fooled into thinking Firefox doesn't have security problems.

Reformat and start over but first... understand how it happened and who you can prevent it or you'll be doing this weekly.

Call me crazy or lucky, but I've never had a virus on my computer and I've never used an active firewall. Just a quick scan here and there with my regular tasks can turn up some adware/spyware now and again, but nothing that required a reformat.

Same here Alan, I detest running firewalls and anti-virus software and I have yet to be stricken with a virus or hacking issue. The biggest defense to avoid getting a virus or being hacked is just safe browsing, downloading, etc...

A virus or malware doesn't destroy hardware...just data. I proper and complete wipe of the drive would have gotten rid of everything and anything on the HDD.

That just means that your hard drive is dead. A virus doesn't cause that.
