Hi everyone. For about a month now, my computer is getting slower by the day. It has no viruses, but is around 8 years old. (Surprised it is still running) For my birthday, I am looking at getting a new computer. Now, I need some advice.

I am thinking about backing up my FS2004 data and other stuff and put it on my new computer. Possibly burning it onto a disk. Would that work?

About getting a new computer, I would prefer a desktop over a laptop. I don't like buying over the Internet; I prefer seeing it before I buy. What stores do you recommend? Any other ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

I have external hdd's connected by USB - they work very well for me. As for a new computer, you might want to consider a good local computer shop. At least talk to one or two unless you already know of a store with a good reputation. I think they can custom-make something for equal to, or less, than what you'd buy at a Best Buy, etc.. 'Hope that helps and good luck. Let us know how it goes! smile

I would perform a fresh install of FS9 onto your new computer rather than trying to import data from your old computer.

I've said it many times -- if you are going to buy a computer, build it from either Newegg or TigerDirect -- it is far cheaper than getting it through BestBuy/Compusa etc.

Also, saitek for rudder/yoke/etc they are nice smile

I read you didn't like buying stuff on the internet, but it's going to be MUCH cheaper if you buy from Newegg.com, and if you build it yourself (which can be a somewhat fun experience too )

Also, you can't just copy and paste FS9 files, and having them work, because the installer writes entries in the registry too, and creates other files that could be hard to find... you can find a cheap copy of FS9 on EBAY...

fs9 is like $20 or probly less now on Amazon. and is it hard to build your own computer once you have all the parts?

Mostly plug it all in with a few screws here and there. The manuals are fairly detailed and won't take you very long.

Just know that you can't put FS9 on an external hard drive and run it. Even if it was possible, the data rate would be so slow through the USB that it would be like watching an aviation slideshow.

Brice, just to be clear, I was referring to backing up your FS9 data on an external hdd. Nicholas is correct; there's no way that I know of to run flight simulator on an external hdd. wink

newegg is a good site. I have bought the last 4 computers from Bestbuy. This last one that I bought has been the best one yet. never heard of thebrand, but when I started questions, I found out that that this company has been making gaming computers and motherboards for years...just now got to making computers with their own names on them. it's not even a year old yet, and I'm having good lluck with this one. I love it. I need a better video card, but the one I have is sufficient for me at the moment. I've checked newegg and they seem to have good prices. ask the guys what you need and what you can afford, then have them send you theparts. you can't go wrong. I've learned alot from these guys

I bought everything from Newegg. And it really isn't too hard to put the PC together. There is a learning curve, but the hardest part is making sure you buy the right parts and that they're all compatible with each other. It's well worthit due to the price. It may take a lot longer, but you'll save some good money and get a far superior PC.
