Interesting review here. Looks like it beats the HD 5870 in some situations but loses in others.

$100 more than the HD 5870 and uses 28% more power but then again I am an ATI fanboy.

I just pre-ordered the EVGA 470 SuperClocked. I didn't get the 480 because I can't justify that bump in speed for 150 bucks. I don't think it ships for another couple weeks, so I might upgrade to the 480 if I see reason enough to.

Skylar looking at what details they have out, would you do the 470 or the 480. I only play FSX, don't really see myself playing any much more. I could swing the extra 150 if it really would help, but I don't see it doing that.

You're really wasting your money Skylar. Wait for ATI's response. They're probably going to produce something to counter the new Nvidia cards. Kind of like how the 4890 is an improved 4870.

LOL, its always a game of leap frog, but if you just sit and wait cuz there will be
something better and faster soon, well, you'll never HAVE anything to enjoy now.

FSX does always push us for more, as I just bought an i7 975 processor and now
have to build up a system I'm not sure if I'll settle for a GTX 285 or get the
cutting edge smile

How can you trust a review of a card that has yet to be released...

From tom's hardware: "AMD took the price-performance crown with the 4000 series, and after looking at the reviews online, things won't be any different with the 5000 series. Plus, why get a GTX 480 when the 5970 uses roughly the same amount of power but offers much better performance?"

The biggest issue I have with my ATI card over a Nvidia is the fact that I still get very "shiny", more or less flickering textures as I move -- things that shouldn't really be shimmering, but do anyways. Now a stock NVIDIA card does have these issues to an extent, but a simple NHANCER run fixes it easily -- sadly ATI cannot do that.

Honestly, I am all about being able to stretch out and say "look at what I can do even though I won't use half of it under normal circumstance" -- I personally would shell out the cash for the 480 just because it's that much nicer, but tbh if you have a budget in mind, stick with it -- the performance boost probably isn't that big enough to warrant the $150 extra.

Generally speaking I am a NVIDIA fanboy, but the ATI cards are really nice and up until the new 470 and 480, ATI had the cutting-edge technology -- which means ATI will remain ahead when they develop their next card series.

It's a tough call. All you can do is keep your budget in mind, and buy whatever the latest technology is at THAT SPECIFIC MOMENT -- and not look back smile

I will say, since I play multiple games -- the 5870 was a great investment over the older GTX 285 2GB.

FSX is all about the more memory you have, the more you profit. 1.5GB is going to be better than 1GB -- end of story, however the ATI technology is quite amazing...

To illustrate just how hard of a time I had deciding, I have an ATI Sapphire 5870 gamer edition, but my case is GREEN with a NVIDIA logo all over it

I'd go with newer technology. Yes, the 5870 only has 1GB of ram, but it will outperform that 285 any day of the week. Some minor things like shimmering you will have to adjust to (which can mostly be mitigated if you play with), and that's about it.

GDDR5>GDDR3

The more and more I think about it, the more I appreciate getting the 5870 over a nvidia card, and I <3 nvidia.
