AFAIK, this is what most people use for 3 monitors: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/

Do you have an ATI gpu or nvidia? with ATI you can get a Display port to VGA converter and have 3.

I have 2 monitors hooked up to my video card. I found this little jewel at Best Buy. You can hook up a third monitor via the USB port. Not fast enough to run FS9 , but good enough to surf or bring charts up or live ACARS map.

With a splitter, you would see the same thing on both monitors and not be able to change one...

You could always buy a PCI-E x1 graphics card and have to graphics cards running. Of course don't run FSX on that card, but I used to have that for my 3 monitor setup and worked great.

I've done the same as Tom in the past. It worked great for me as well.
