Hey guys.

My computer has really been giving me problems with FSX lately. When I first purchased the computer (about a year ago) FSX ran decently on my system. Now I'm reluctant to start FSX because I know it is going to shutter constantly. This really fustrates me and puts my simulation enjoyment on hold. Before I got about 10 to 12 FPS but now 1 to 4 FPS. My question is why is there a significant drop in my FPS over the course of a year. My system is capable of running FSX on medium settings to high settings. I'll post specs if needed. Thanks for the help.

The only thing I can think of is maybe you need to update your drivers for your video card, mother board etc. Are you running any recently installed programs that run with FSX? Sometimes certain sceneries will cause major hits to FPS.. Have you installed any new sceneries? My knowlage of the workings of computers is limited so I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Dale the only new scenery I've installed was one freeware for Atlanta. And Sergio even when the settings are completely low i still get 1 to 3 FPS.

If you installed FSX a year ago - and haven't done a clean install / real defrag of your system - that could be your fix.

Suggestions on upgrades? I included my specs in the picture above.

Andrew I ran both a disk cleaner and a defragmenter last night. I'll check today to see if there were any improvements.

Uninstall that freeware scenrey for Atlanta and do a virus scan. I once installed it and my virus scan detected it as an infected file.

Keeny your graphics card is weak, and its not good enough to run FSX at thoose settings.
Please post your full PC specs.

Now what you can do .. is :
1-Use O&O defrag (theres 30 day demo version)
2-Reduce your settings
3-Insure no viruse
4-Do some system cleanups
5-overclock your graphic card.
6-Upgrade your graphics card cool

I shall post my settings shortly

My PC specs
C2D 2.66 Ghz
160 HDD
9400GT (almost similar to yours, but little bit more powerfull)
2 Gigs RAM
XP 32bit
My graphics card is overclocked to the maximum ,which killed stuttering until i upgrade my PC

As for traffic, they are all to off.
turning off autogen might also help you a lot.
Do you have any FSX.cfg tweaks installed??

Thats pretty much what you can do until you upgrade your PC

Thanks Rabee that's the answer I was looking for. And I was considering purchasing the same graphics card as yours. Good buy or not? Rabee I tried tweaking FSX once but I think I was unsuccessful at doing so. I need help in the area of tweaking FSX. Should I also upgrade the CPU?

Keldon thanks for the answer. Tried the reinstall; no luck. I'm just going to get an upgrade on graphics card.

Rabee as I was just flying today the same pattern happens everytime I fly. The FPS starts at 5 if my aircraft is on the runway, then once I takeoff my FPS drop to 1 which is basically a slideshow happening right in front of me. Why is that?

Sorry for the countless amount of questions I'm asking.

You are weak all around for FSX, 32bit OS, only 3G of memory, and 3 generations old on video.
I had about twice as strong a setup back before I upgraded to an i7, and even then I would run
FSX on medium settings.

I would recommend a new computer if that's within the realm of possibilities.

okay ... as jack said not super computer , you should be able to run FSX at my settings or even lower.
I d sure recommend now PC upgrade.
but it depends on your budjet.

Lets say ....
1-Quad Coe 3 ghz (at least)
2-4 gigs ram (more is better)
3-Raptor @ 10000 rpm or a SSD hard drive (dnt know if its good for FSX)
4-At least 9800 GTX (around 90$) or a Geforce 280 GTX (around 300$) , or anything better from ATI
5-offcourse Win 7 64 bit

Actually this is my upgrade plan for summer ^^^^
will be moving out next year to college, so dont want to spend lots of money on it.
that should put you some where between midium - high at a solid state FPS (dnt know a value)
If your planing on only replacing your current parts .... id say it would coast a minmum of 500$ ??~?
keep looking on New Egg and in other places for best deal
I can help you tweaking your FSX.cfg later on.

Unless if your planing on spending more than 1500$ on bringing fancy stuff .... not pretty worth it , but it might be to you.

I don't think you'll pay that much more for an i5 or i7 than you would for
a quad core, the machine I just upgraded FROM was a Q9300 quad core
with 8G of slower DDR3 memory.

Don't waste money on a 10K disk, they are expensive and you'll get way
more bang for the buck from having more RAM. Same thing with the SSD,
a coworker in my group here at Intel bought one on employee discount,
and he was underwelmed with the result. Not saying it makes NO difference
but the question is how much. Also, the 9800 is two generations behind,
get at least some flavor of GTX2XX if you can't get 470 (which btw costs
no more than a 280), I have a GTX270 in my machine, its the weak link
for me right now.

FSX wants as much compute horsepower (CPU cycles) as you can throw at it, and its a
memory hog (more fast DDR3 ram), after those two factors you want a monster GPU.
Then, wrap Win 7 x64 around that, and you're gonna be happier.

Here's a video on how the FPS go from 6 to 1 in about a minute or two. The settings are low to medium. Googled "low fps" and found out that a expensive system is not even necccesarry to run FSX. This individual had a weaker processor than me, less RAM, but a slightly higher graphics card. He achieved about 40-50 fps. That puzzles me.
