This may be a far fetched idea but I thought I'd share it. Why not have a thread called First Officers Corner that people, new to Delta, can come to for their set up problems? Then you could have people, that have been with Delta for a while, volunteer to help the new people. I was lucky when I joined Delta, over a year ago, because Andy Kauffman took of his time to help me get going (Thanks Andy).

As I bounce around, the Water Cooler, I see many new folks that have problems that are of the same nature but just stated differently. I also noticed that there are, in some cases, more than 1 answer given to the new persons problem. As a new person tries each solution he changes his configuration file, downloads different files, or completly reinstalls system files. By the time all of this has taken place the Water Cooler fills with more and more problems from the new people. Having a one on one relationship, with someone to help them, the new person then haves a logical diagnostic tree that can be followed by them and their helper. They get up and flying faster and the Water Cooler is less cluttered.

Like I said......a far fetched idea but thought I'd share it anyway.

Not far fetched at all and actually I think it's a great idea. Personally, to take it a step further, I always thought a mentor program would be great. The only problem is, this is what CP and ACPs are for so I can see where it may get shot down.

It could be a new category for the WC, like General Avation Discussion, ACARS development, etc.

To follow up on Andrew Lynn's comment, I can assure you that no ACP or CP that I know would not completely appreciate the mentor program concept. We in the 737, stage2 program, have many hundreds of pilots, who continually email us and present a number of questions and problems, which we try to answer as best as we can. We are simply overwhelmed with the pirep reviews and checkrides to be able to individually tutor and/or instruct and solve computer problems. Any avenue of help is always welcomed.

Take care smile

I am aware of this and that is why I suggest that volunteers help the new folks. The ACP's and PC's really have too much going on to mentor each new pilot. You only need to check out the member list to appericiate the gravity of this statement. Furthermore the member grows ever larger day by day and week by week.

It would just be really nice if somthing like this could be done. But I also understand that there are a lot of logistical problems that go with such an endeavor.

David,

I know, for a fact, we do a TON of mentoring. I have beed working with a guy in the 767 ( Yes 767 ) program for a couple of weeks now.

I posted in the water cooler a while back a open letter to anyone thinking about taking the 737 CR they could e-mail me for help. There is an "unofficial" mentoring program going on right now.

All anyone has to do, is ask nicely, we will help.

Maybe it could be possible to create a section on the site in which experienced DVA pilots can put themselves on a list for new pilots to request training with. We would possibly need someone (most likely a CP or ACP) to look over the "volunteers" record to make sure they really know how to fly well (such as taking a look at previous check rides and flight reports) and so that they would be able to teach the "student" in a correct manner.

Just a thought.

Luke I submitted a help desk request in the beginning of August suggesting something very similar to your idea. My suggestion was to have a cadre of training captains for each fleet to provide training to assist pilots in flight operations and in preparation for checkrides. Currently Ken Nesbitt is looking into it.

I for one think the idea of a mentoring program is a fantastic idea especially if it's type-specific to what aircraft the mentor is currently rated as Captain in. If the program fires up I'll be one of the first to join/offer assistance.

+1, especially since my area of expertise lies exclusively with the 747 (both fleet and PMDG).

I find, as a rookie, that by simply reading what's already here not only do my questions get answered but I find information about questions I didn't even know I had yet! Seems to me the mentoring program is already in place. You, the far more experienced pilots, provide all I have ever needed to know. If Captains and Senior Captains have an issue or question one can be assured that it quite likely is a new concern. Us newbies can easily find the solutions to our issues by simply reading what you've already shared.

Intriguing idea. This is reminiscient of something we had in the Air Force called the LPA (Lieutenant Pilot Association), which was more or less a sort of a "union", but it held much of the same purposes you're talking about here. Of course, we also called it the Lieutenant Protection Agency as well, for various reasons. cool

Others have already mentioned the level of activity of our Water Cooler. This is probably about as active of a forum as you'll see around the entire flight sim community in such an organized manner. I can't think of very many issues that have come up since I've been hanging around these parts that hasn't been discussed or resolved right here, from FS98 right on up to X.

A mentorship is a great topic of conversation, and I already see a lot of it within these pages by the prompt attention that folks' posts get. DVA also has the Flight Academy - I think it's back up and running now? Sorry, I'm on the other side of the pond here. That's another form of mentoring as well. The relationship and bond built between student and instructor is hard to describe any other way that to say "family" or "brotherhood". The entire aviation community is like this, no matter where you go. Pilots are a special breed and tend to stick together like glue, and I'm certainly glad that the same holds true here!

Also of noteworthy mention are the various manuals and encyclopedias that were all written and published in-house to address most of the common problems and questions that people new to flight simulation and DVA/AFVA ask about. They are all very well written and comprehensive.
