So I'm going to build a new Flight Sim Desktop with my Student Loan:

From Newegg:

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Video Card: GIGABYTE GV-N460OC-1GI GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-650HX 650W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power
Processor: Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBRL
HDD1: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
HDD2: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Monitor: ASUS VW195T-P Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
Optical Drive: LG Black 10X Blu-ray Burner - Bulk SATA WH10LS30 LightScribe Support - OEM
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full

Total Cost: $1,589.83

How does this look? I'm open for honest opinions.
If there's anything I can take out or reduce in cost let me know.

I'm giving my current rig to my father. My current one has many hiccups and can't render 3D Clouds too well which is a real bummer.
I'll be using it for FS9 primarily and if I can FSX.

Get a 750W PSU honestly, or larger. Gives you the option to run that 460 in SLI later.

go with the i5 instead of the 7, you can get the same results from overclocking, runs cooler, and runs with less power, other then that, id say your gonna love your Flight Simming experience on that rig

Make sure its the 64bit OS so your system can take full advantage of the 5gb memory addressing. (4gb ram + 1 gb video ram). I mentioned this on another thread, but I dont really think a 1tb hard drive is necessary. I don't know what the price points are, but 500gb will probably suffice. Two 10k RPM drives would be optimum...15k if they are available, but would probably be pricy.

Im trying to keep it close to $1500,

I'll consider the 750W PSU
Regarding i5, what is the difference to the i7? I'm just power greedy biggrin

I heard 32-Bit can recognize more than 4GB of RAM... is the 64-Bit really necessary?
Also should I buy the Full Windows 7 OS or the OEM package for System Builders?

Windows 7 Home Premium is cheaper as OEM for System Builders priced at $99.
In regards to the memory is a CAS Latency of 9-9-9-24 good?

64 bit is 100 percent necesary if you want to run 64 bit programs as well as load her up in RAM. Always but the best you can afford, if you can afford the i7, by all means scoop it up. Me i run win 7 64 bit Ultimate. Its got more features, if you want to know more, head over to microsofts site and compare-----> http://store.microsoft.com/Windows7/Compare

but mine was an upgrade from vista so i surely didnt pay 319 for it, i bought the upgrade

I'm thinking Windows 7 Professional would be best suited.

I believe FSX and FS2004 should be made to run in Windows XP mode correct?

OEM is the same thing as the full version, only difference is you cannot take that CD and install it on a new PC with a different motherboard.

You NEED 64bit. 32 bit will only read 3 1/2 gigs of your memory. Get 64bit so you can later upgrade to more ram if you choose.

I have Vista 64 Bit at the moment it does run the full 4GB but from what I've heard is that Windows 7 can accept 4GB of RAM on 32-Bit.

I'll end up buying the 64-Bit I guess.

No. It will only read 3 1/2 of the 4.

And no don't run either in XP compatibility mode.

So I'm guessing Windows 7 has the best performance now that we dont even have to run in XP Compatibility mode?

Then I don't need the Professional or Ultimate really do I?

Thanks for clarifying. smile

I'm hoping that building the computer myself using my Stafford Loan money for $5500 isn't out of the question.
I want it for school work but as well for FS and such. I'm receiving direct deposit and I hear all these rumors that you can use the money for anything but as the person I am, I worry and quesiton always first.

You will want a different kit of RAM. What you have now is dual channel; the Intel 9xx series will run best on triple channel. Mushkin is pretty good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226102

Wow thanks! I added that to my list.

But now with everything suggested im looking at a price of $1599 lol.
I had to remove the Velociraptor and well im down to $1459.

I've replaced it with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136544

It has 6.0GB/s, 64MB Cache and 7200RPM.

Regarding Windows 7, it looks like you already know, but definitely go with OEM. You save a boat load of cash. Also, keep an eye out for bundle deals. I just recently built a machine for a different purpose, and a bundle showed up that got me Windows 7 for $80. (or half of the case, depends on how you look at it).

As a bump, is the GTX 260 generally a good video card for FS2004 and FSX?
I don't see much videos on youtube with people using it for FS.

Those that I have seen, it seems like their system is bottlenecked or either bad configuration.

Also is there any bottlenecks/compatibility problems that you can see in my configuration?
If someone could please analyze the products for me as well, that'd be great and much appreciated. smile
On another note can the i7 be overclocked easily to 3.80GHz at least?

You can find the products at Newegg.

I have my intel i7 920 D0 overclocked to 4.0Ghz on an H50 cooler, so I imagine with modifying the voltage on your 950 you can do it.

Go with the 460 tbh -- DX11 support is being added to new games, and I guarantee it will be with the new Microsoft Flight game.

Edit:

Generally speaking, your largest bottleneck will be your Hard Drive (Lower RPM). The 460 is a super card for the price range, and the 950 with a sizable overclock will be great. Your only issue will be the hard drive (I'm talking a 7200rpm hard drive vs a Solid State (SDD).

Oops I noticed I wrote GTX 260 instead of GTX 460 haha. Sorry.

Yes I'll be going with the GTX 460 then.

I'll keep looking at the Hard Drives too.
Thanks!
