It's been a while since I took this old dog for a walk...but it is actually a very nice version of the very first "Maddog"...The Super 80 (MD81)...BTW...it should not to be confused with the Super 80 Pro...
The Super 80 was very complex for it's time...with many automated systems (modeled very nicely) that were considered cutting edge...For instance...
"The LTN-31l Omega/VLF Navigation System (ONS) is a worldwide, all-weather navigation system. The system processes the signals transmitted by selected very low frequency Omega Navigation and VLF communication stations to determine the airplane's position in terms of latitude and longitude."
Basically...it was a hybrid system...it bridged the gap between the older INS units and the newer GPS/FMS based systems that we know and love today...
The Coolsky developers did a superb job with this aircraft and in doing so provided the FS community with an important "missing link" in the maddog pedigree and the evolution of modern navigational equipment and automation...
It's the "Goldie Locks" of navigational systems...and for this reason I like it alot...it provides me with a welcomed change of pace when I start to get bored with too much (FMS/GPS) or too little (VOR/INS) automation...
It's very...
Edit: Does anyone know if this version of the MD80 was actually used in the RW at any time by Delta Airlines?

As ususal Andy (Mr. Link)...you have almost instantaneously provided a link to help answer a members question...and for that I thank you...
Now...I'm well aware of the fact that Delta currently uses MD88's...extensively...and they began maufactuing them in the early nineties...However, my question has more to do with the unique navigational system (ONS) that has been replicated in this particular version of the MD80...
The aircraft I'm interested in knowing about would probably have been a MD81 as opposed to an MD88...manufactured in the early 70's as opposed to the early 90's...
I'm looking for some historical perspective on how widespread the use of the ONS navigation system was in its day...I'm sure that by the early nineties it was considered obsolete and my research indicates that it was being "dismantled" bit by bit worldwide during that decade...but did the majority of airlines use it or only a select few...I tried researching this subject but details are sketchy...so I was hoping that someone here at DVA had some first or even second hand knowledge about it...

I know northwest had some MD80's they got in a merger (one was in the infamous NWA 255 crash), no idea if they made it this far.

Hey James...thanks for posting...yes I remember that unfortunate accident...the crew did not go through the taxi checklist and subsequently "forgot" to set the slats/flaps for TO...a 4 year old girl was the only survivor...very sad...
BTW...do you happen to know what year Delta began flying MD80's (any version)...?

Hey Nick...thanks...but it's so funny to me that #2 is your favorite...I only included it to show how complex the thing is to fly...
Like all versions of DC-9 lineage...to varying degrees...it's almost a "Rube Goldberg" contraption...different systems are spread out over many different panels that are in turn located in many different places...it's fun to fly but it sure seems like it was designed by an "ergonomically challenged" engineer...it gives a "modern" pilot some perspective on just how easy they have it...
Just juxtapose this panel with it's diametrically opposite one...let's say...an Airbus A320...which is so ergonomically conscious as to be a utilitarian, one size fits all affair...But then again what do you expect from European engineers whose credo is "form follows function"...Eventually there will only be one lever in their cockpits: UP/Down...
Edit: I know it's a scary thought for you Nick...but Boing is moving swiftly in the same general direction...just look at the T7 and 787 cockpits...if they were light blue you could almost mistake them for an Airbus...

That's what's got me worried about the 748, the inside has too many screens... Take a look here: http://www.boeing.com/newairplane/747/design_highlights/ It's actually a pretty neat site about the 747-800.

North Central (merged with Southern and Hughes Air West creating Republic) ordered the to compliment their fleet of 30s and 50s. Once they became Republic, they decided to keep their small order.... and get more later to retire the 727. Well "later" never happened. When they merged with Northwest Orient, NW had their eyes on Airbus to replace 727, but they went ahead and kept the 8 MD81/2s and their A320 order.
When NC ordered them, they were under the impression it would have the same cockpit as the -50 (basically, they wanted a stretched 50 with more powerful engines), but they weren't the same and they had to have a separate equipment program for 7 or 8 aircraft.
My father was a mechanic for RC and NW and when they decided to retire them in 1998, the VP came to MEM and sat down with the mechanics and told them that they were going to sell them to another airline (I think AA). He ended up convincing the VP that that was not what they needed to do and told them to scrap the planes.
Well, dad convinced them enough for this:

Robert,
I realize that your post is a month old, but this is a good way to find out about Delta's fleet first hand.
