Hello everyone,
I dropped my laptop last weekend and now get the blue screen with white lettering that tells me that I have an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error. I have google-ed the error on a different computer due to the fact of not being able to even start my laptop.

So my question is, if I re-install Windows XP, will that erase my whole hard drive?

Please help and thank in advance.

Graham,

If you dropped the laptop then chances are you either cratered the hard drive or knocked the connection to it loose.

Unplug it, pull the battery, Open it up, pull the drive and plug it back in. If that doesn't fix it then there's a good chance the hard drive is busted.

Was it running when you dropped it?

Also, make sure your internal memory modules are seated since they can be knocked loose during a drop.

Best of luck with it!

Yes it was on when it was dropped. It stayed on until I got into my dorm room. Everything was still working until I tried opening iTunes on it. Then the computer froze. I tried rebooting it and it went straight to the Windows "Start Normal, Last figuration, Safe Mode". Then when I click any of those, it goes straight to the blue screen

Assuming that you could reload windows XP, there is an option to REPAIR your current OS. They do warn you that you could lose any or all files (meaning documents and such) but I have used this method without any ill effects. If you dropped the laptop hard enough to damage the hard drive, I'm surprised you haven't damaged the screen. If you have important school documents that you need to recover, you might want to remove the drive and install it in an external case. This would allow you to plug it into a USB port of another computer and attempt to retrieve your data. If there isn't anything of importance on the drive, reloading the OS would be the way to go.

There are a number of things that could have happened when you dropped it that are causing this problem; hard drive (as mentioned), system board damaged or any of a number of connections that may have come loose. Reinstalling XP most likely isn't going to help.
