I was hoping to get any tweaking advice to the build I am finally able to finish. here is what I have already on hand.

ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58
OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Antec Nine Hundred Two Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-750HX 750W

I still needed to get a CPU, heatsink, video card, and hard drive. Here is what I was looking at:

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211
or
Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115224

EVGA SuperClocked 012-P3-1572-AR GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130595

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

I wanted to stay around $800ish. Is it better to have two hard drives, one strictly for FS stuff? Anything I should look at tweaking?
Thanks for any help suggestions.

I would make whatever sacrifices you can to get the i7 2500 or 2600 series. They are pretty far ahead of the i7 9xx series. 570 looks good. I have two hard drives, one for OS and one for FSX

These CPU's have been recalled. I wouldn't know where to get one....Newegg, Tigerdirect, my local Fry's electronics don't have any. Last I read the replacements won't be available until April.

They had some issues but they primarily had to do with SATA II, and it wouldn't be that large of an issue to get them fixed under warranty if you already had one in hand. However, like you said, they are pretty much off the market at this point. I would wait until they do become available, as the improvement over the the earlier i7's is large.

+1, but if you need the system RIGHT now, I'd spend the extra $20 and get the faster 960. And yes, FSX benefits from having its own hard drive. That being said, I only use one HDD, and it's fine for me. Other than that, the system looks good! smile

I have been doing some research on building a new FSX rig myself. My intention is to get 2 450gb WD Velociraptor HDD's. My current rig has a single Caviar Black, and the data transfer rate from it seems to be one of my biggest system slow-downs. Newegg has some Velociraptors that have 6gb/s transfer rates. I'm looking at those and a mother board that will support that transfer rate (specifically the ASUS Rampage Extreme MB). I've looked at solid state drives, but I need to do some more research on them because I've found some information that suggests they may not have a very long life. Especially with routine defragging. If anyone here has any insight on that, I'd love to hear it!

Looks like your rig should be a pretty nice one!
