I have used this in XP but it may work in later versions of Windows. Create a new shortcut on your desktop and point it to "Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" (exclude the ""). Run this shortcut before you start any FS programs and it will free up valuable CPU cycles by forcing any idle tasks to execute rather than just sitting there hogging your CPU. It may take time to run its course but you will know when it has finished as the hourglass will disappear.

I believe this was originally put into XP as a benchmarking tool to ensure that when being tested with XP there was nothing getting in the way of the test program. As for the technicalities of it I'm not sure - I have a link somewhere which I will try and fish out.
