The other day my computer started to freeze up at the Windows XP screen. I did a google search and found out it could be my display adapter. I downloaded the new driver for my Nvidia 9800 GTX and still am having the problem. Could this be a sign that my graphics card is going out?

Perhaps ....but not likely. The first thing I would do is open up your computer case and blow out all the the dust that has accumulated. If your computer can't cool itself it isn't going to run very well.

I was messing around with things and I pressed f8 during boot. I then went into Safe Mode with command prompt and found that Windows was freezing on a file called GIVEIO.SYS. I googled that and found out that it belonged to Speed Fan which I have had installed on my computer for sometime. I uninstalled Speed Fan and have had 3 consecutive successful boots without freezing at the Windows Splash Screen. I was beginning to get worried that I had some major issues and would have to reinstall the operating system which I really dislike doing due to all my FS addons.

Seems to me you have two options. Try a windows repair from your boot disk or Clean reinstall. Sounds like windows OS has a corrupted or missing file. It could very well be the hard drive also. The bios is finding the OS on the HDD but OS is unable to load specific files due either to them missing or corrupted due to bad sectors on HDD? Could boot in safe mode and due a disk check. Also. if it boots in safe mode everytime. You are missing a driver of some type.

Every third or fourth time it boots normally without any issues. If the OS had corrupt files would it still work every now and then? When I started up my computer a few minutes ago it started right up.
