Hello VATSIMers,
First off let me introduce myself. My name is Sam, I’m 14 years old and I’m from Indiana. My dad is a real life B747-400 pilot for the REAL Delta Airlines. I love flying on the simulator and I enjoy it very much.
I'm running FSX on a Windows 7 64 bit system on a Dell Inspiron with an AMD processer. I am a somewhat new member to the VATSIM network for my virtual airline (http://www.deltava.org). I have experienced a great deal of issues everywhere I turn, which has been making my experience extremely frustrating (to the point where I want to scream). First off, here's a list of the issues that I've experienced:
-When I downloaded ACARS for my VA the FSUIPC didn't install correctly
-When issue with ACARS was resolved, flew an offline flight and when navigating through the menus for FSX and it froze and a FATAL error occurred, which sent me back to the desktop. (Resolved FIRST fatal error issue with a 'uiautomationcore.dll' patch which stopped the fatal errors from happening from navigating to and from the desktop and navigating through the menus)
-When that error was resolved, I moved on to the VATSIM network to get connected. I registered and received my credentials. (This was my MAJOR ISSUE). Now I needed to get FSINN to connect to VATSIM and I had to reinstall a series of times and had to run everything as administrator after watching many videos on YouTube.
-Now I’m excited to start flying and I connect myself to VATSIM via FSINN and communicating fine using chat. I go to Wal-Mart to purchase a Logitech headset with a microphone that connects via the headset jack and microphone jack. I tested the microphone on the system and it worked perfectly. I followed instructions on one of the VATSIM forums that appeared to help everyone on it, to calibrate the microphone and set up the PTT service. I followed the instructions thoroughly…trust me. Now the microphone won’t work (ONLY ON VATSIM NTWK), there’s nothing wrong with the microphone, it just doesn’t seem to want to work with VATSIM. However, I can hear the ATC. (This issue isn’t resolved, if I could have help with this also, that would be great)
-This morning I was flying a test flight with an Airbus Industrie A319-100 from New Orleans to Miami Int’l. I communicated with the towers and centers via chat. When on final approach to Runway 09 about 800 ft. out, Flight Simulator froze and sent me to the desktop with yet another FATAL error message. It froze randomly without me touching anything. Thus far, I’m about to lose it with all of the problems I’m encountering. This is the main issue on this forum entry. It’s a new fatal error message that isn’t really triggered by anything. It is completely random, and sometimes it never happens. It’s extremely frustrating along with the microphone not working. I need something besides the following (which I’ve already performed): applied Win Vista 'uiautomationcore.dll' patch, run everything (including FSX) as administrator, put everything (including FSX) in Win 7 compatibility mode. My flight simulator experience will be a lot more enjoyable without constant fear of crashing.
-The only issue that was resolved that made me happy was making ACARS be able to document my flights online via VATSIM.
It’s extremely difficult for me to just not quit the game because I love it so much. I really would appreciate it if somebody could help me resolve the random crashing problem and the microphone problem. I don’t mean to be rude, but I’d appreciate if people wouldn’t post solutions that will not work or that I’ve already performed such as returning the microphone (it works fine, just can seem to get it to work in FSINN), or download the 'uiautomationcore.dll' patch(I’VE ALREADY DONE IT). Please help me
Have a nice day,
Samuel Holland

For VATSIM, try using Squawkbox instead. Also, check your output settings, if you're using Direct sound, try changing to wav, and vice versa, if you're currently using wav. Check to make sure the mic isn't muted in your windows settings, as well as in FSinn/SB settings. Make sure you have the latest drivers by going to Logitech's website. Don't know about the random crash. Is there any error messages?

Just realized you said you had an inspiron. Is it a laptop or desktop? Just so you know, laptop's aren't designed for gaming. While you may get it working, it may not be what you expect it to be.

When I saw "Random Fatal Error Crashing" I knew I had to click on this thread. I run Windows 7 64Bit as well, but not on a laptop... so maybe that's not the issue. Unfortunately, I cannot predict when "A fatal error has occured," but I completely understand when you say it's frustrating.. especially after a 13 hour leg on a 5 mile final and you get that message and everything shuts off.
I've got a friend who is also using Windows 7, and having the crashing a lot more often. He called microsoft and they put 2 files on his computer and he said he hasn't had FSX crash in a week, so maybe that could be the solution?

Always run FSINN from outside FSX.
The headset/microphone problem plagues me too - always has. Once I have selected the headset/microphone,and am using FSINN, I never mess with switching back to speakers. If I do that, I lose the microphone; I find myself hearing but not able to talk. To fix, I'll shutdown FSINN's ControlPanel - wait 10 seconds for it to close down, then reopen. My microphone will work again. Real pain, but I am used to it now. Also plug unplug headset, shift beween sound on and sound off, and/or restarting ControlPanel will get me going. I think part of my problem is I have electrical noise getting into my headset and messing things up. Doesn't happen that often, but when it does, I can get going again in less than 20 seconds.
MOD: also monitor the transmit/recieve. I can tell when someone is transmitting and I am not hearing. That's one of the ways I know I am off the air. Clicking sounds (noise) is a hint too. If I think ATC is talking to me, I'll text them and ask them for 20 seconds to fix my voice.
