Hi all,
I am in the process of moving from FS9 to FSX.
I have a Dell Studio XPS 435 PC with I7 920 processor, 6GB RAM, ATI HD5770 vid card (1GB memory), running Win7-64bit version.
FS9 runs great with tons of planes, ASE, SB, FSNAV, and addon scenery galore.
I have been poking around in FSX with default scenery, SB4 (can't get FSINN to connect to VATSIM) and the PMDG 747. Frames are anywhere from 15-40 fps. The frames do fluctuate a lot it seems (more so than FS9).
Question: should I buy another 5770 and do crossfire, or just buy a better vid card (ATI HD6950 is what I am looking at), for better performance?
thoughts?
Thanks!

If you are going all out with FSX, go with NVIDIA. Just my 2 cents..

I believe some games (not sure about FSX) are not optimized for Crossfire/SLI. You're better off just buying a single better video card than going Crossfire. Alex does have a point about Nvidia, as i have heard they perform better in FSX that ATI, but it's up to you. I have always used Nvidia, and they work great!

Once I discovered VATSIM and the world of VA I built a rig just for FSX. While doing my research I found that Crossfire or SLI will give no greater frame rate advantage. Flight Simulator is a CPU / Memory intensive program. It looks like you have the right hardware and should be very happy. I am running FSX on a Gigabyte 890 Mobo, 1090T AMD, Evga 560, 8 gig Ram system. I have a hard drive dedicated to Win7, I have a 300 gig Raptor drive just for FSX. At first I had a lot of growing pains with FSX- CTD after an hour or switching x amount of windows, FSINN issues, and others. Now I just fly and have fun but to get there I had to do my homework and read a lot of frustrated players post and find solutions from others. Here are the 2 threads that I found that made it possible.
This thread I attribute to my system no longer CTD after so long of use on FSX.

This thread is what will help your framerate and make it more stable.

I stopped using FS Copilot/FSinn. One of the pilots after reading issues that I was having with it just suggested to is Squawkbox and I have been very happy with it once I got the hang of it. Plus you will notice that SB4 does not take as many resources.
The only other recommendation that I could give is really understand that UAC/ Administrator Rights / Software designed to protect you will also cause you a lot of grief if you dont follow the above threads recommendations. I after I accepted and learned found that if I did clean installs with UAC OFF / All Protection OFF / Firewall OFF / and used installed everything with admin rights -my issues went away. Once installed I turned everything back on and even have Norton 360 in full force. If you look at my flights and average frame rates - my flights are smooth with no jerkyness, I have everything at max that the above thread says to and I can fly for hours now and not worry about the dreaded CTD.
I hope this helps!

If you have an old computer setting around, Nouthing fancy, run SB or any Vatsim client on it in a network setting. Has 0 effect on the sim computer. I have been running 3 computers with one dedicated to FSX/FS9 only for 5yrs now. Using WideFS and FSUIPC. No stutters, no CTD's, no reinstalls, no OOM and tons of addons! Between ACARS, Vatsim clients, surfing the internet etc. Its asking too much for any one computer.
