Michael....always ensure that you have feathered the props prior to any starting attempts. This was always one of the first items I completed during cockpit set-up. If you do not and try to start each engine you will inevitably torch them. Prop feather switch located next to throttles...hit the switch and confirm your props have turned "flat"...that should help.
