I seem to be having more trouble with Vista than it's worth. It's a few years old so it came installed on the box and I'm thinking about downgrading it to XP. I don't feel like spending another $100 to upgrade to Win 7 and I still have an upopened OEM disc for XP I never used. Is there any reason you guys might think of that this would deem this a bad idea?

Well, I just switched to Win 7 and it feels a lot nicer than XP ever did to me. And I have had xp for... I don't even remember how long. But, in the end, it's really your decision to switch or not.

Either XP or Win7 are better than Vista. I stayed on XP for the longest time until the Win7 free beta came out, and it was a keeper.

Cheers!

One thing to look out for is that there may not be XP drivers available for the hardware for your system, depending on the manufacturer. I have a Toshiba laptop that I tried to downgrade to XP with, only to find out that there were no XP drivers for the onboard sound, video, or network devices.

Well it was worth a shot. The chipset drivers weren't available for XP on my system so I just reinstalled Vista fresh rather than deal with the hassle. I've heard a lot of people making good coments on 7 so I guess I'll just bite the bullet and go for the upgrade. I think Vista was to XP was ME was to 98.

Actually this brings up a good question. I've never tried it before, but can you upgrade to 64 bit direct from a 32 bit OS? In other words upgrade Vista 32 to 7 64? My gut feeling is no.

I dont know about Vista 32 to 7 64, but I just did Win 7 32 to Win 7 64 with no issues, it saved all of my programs in a folder so you wont lose anything except for personal settings and such unless you do a reformat.

If your a student you can get Windows 7 for $30. You seem like your already out of school, but thought I'd throw it out there just in case. As far as upgrading to 64 bit, it all depends on your CPU and other hardware, if its compatible with 64 bit. I upgraded from XP 32 bit to W7 64 bit, no problems at all!

Thanks for the info, Kyle. As far as school I'm not enrolled this year but I'm working on my 2nd bachelor's so I'll see if the school has anything on that. I know they used to sell Office in the bookstore but I never looked at the price. That might be the best route to go!

You cannot upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit. It will have to be a clean install. If you desire to stay with 32-Bit, you can upgrade in place. I don't recommend either. GO to 64-bit and do a clean install regardless of what you decide.

Wrong wording on my end biggrin when I "upgraded" (going from 32 bit to W7 64 is an upgrade for me :p) I did a clean install. I know it sounds like a pain and its never fun to do, but boy is it worth it!
