Hello everyone,

So it's been about a year that I've been grounded. I'm going into college, got all my payments covered tuition, books and other fees.
Now comes my reward money for my personal use. My majors are Network Administrator and Aeronautical Flight Technology (Double Major).

So computers are allowed to be purchased or built.

My budget is about $1600, I already have computer accessories.

Sim Programs I mainly use:

FS9
FSX
Orbiter
X-Plane

I'm trying to kill stutters, artifacts and bottlenecks which I had on my last build and not waste my time as much with "tweaking".

How does my current selection look? If FSX will run well I assume MS Flight will too. Note I didn't add the optical drive so I could screen shot it but total is $1600.

If there's anything to change, please comment about it. smile

Thanks everyone.

Skip the soundcard and get yourself some better cooling

Thanks for the reply, is the sound card not needed for better performance?
I find it to be better than the onboard sound chips, or is that just me?

What cooling options would you suggest?

That is gonna be an FSX monster!!! I agree... sound card, not such a big deal but if you plan on running FSX at max, you need a good heatsink... I looked into the Thermaltake Frio and the Thermalright MUX 120.. both have good reviews bout the same price as the 92mm you have but these are 120s

other then the sound card, I was going to recomend staying away from a 650 PS, not to mention, and 800 will barely cut it. Also are you going to overclock, cause if your not, I wouldnt waste the money on the cpu cooling. go to overclockers.net and youll read hundreds of article about the fact that if your not overclocking you dont need anything other than stock cooling. Also forget about that intergrated SSD, with something that size you cant even put fsx with a few addons. Get a REAL SSD, atleast 80 gigs and run fsx only on that. one more thing, dont spend on an "overclocked" GPU, you can do it yourself, not to mention you wont see a difference in fsx between that same card overclocked or not. Other than it looks like its a BEAST of a system. Should be able to get good fps in fsx online with your addons. Keep us posted.

yep thats the one, sorry. That site is a great resource tool to use in your build if you are going to do any sort of overclocking

750w will be more than adequate for your build. I have a similar system with a Corsair 750w PSU, and the fan doesn't even spin up. I plugged your system into Corsair's PSU finder, and it reccomended a 550 - 750 watt PSU, so what you have looks good. As others have said, ditch the sound card, as the onboard sound is quite good. Spend that extra cash on a true SSD as Chris suggested. I have actually read that the stock cooling for the 2600k is terrible, and since FSX is a CPU intensive game, I would go ahead and purchase an aftermarket cooler. While the stock one will keep your CPU running within the safe minimums, the thermaltake will keep it running much cooler, prolonging the life of the CPU. Other than that, you have a monster of a machine there! I am anxious to hear what you decide on!

Thanks guys, I've ditched the sound card actually.
As for the 20GB SSD is there a benefit to running windows from there and having FSX on another hard drive?
I'll be overclocking her alright so I need the heatsink. My last build was at 3.8GHz and that was a Core 2 Duo E8500.
How far can I push one of these i7's and have it remain safe and stable? About the PSU how many 12V Rails do i need? That one has 4 but isn't modular. So 750 or 800? My last system ran with a 650W supply.

20g SSD may cover your os and that may be it...I have a 128 SSD and its almost full... OS, FS9+ addons and other little things...If you can fit it in your budget get bigger.. I have FSX on a seperate 500 sata drive since its enormous.
Ive read the 2600 overclocks up to 4.8 and maybe higher...Just make sure your cooling is great and your sys is stable...I think its overclockers.net that has the forums with people giving tutorial on o/cing them...not sure.. Just remember everyones rig is different... Im sitting on an i7 870 and waiting to get my fan so I can get it up to 3.8

I'll see if I can find a regular SSD then, I'm not that big with addons my FSX folder used to be 40GB.
Nice, well I assume the procedure to overclock the new SB Processors is different than the E8500's.
