Im sure this has been asked before, I was away for quite some time. Since im simming again, Im rebuilding my machine. I wanted to a quick reference from my fellow simmers as to which CPU to go for to have FSX going as fluid as possible. I was looking at the i7 2600K Sandybridge and a GTX 570 Graphics Card. Any thoughts?

I have the i7 2600 ....only difference between it and the K model is that the K model is unlocked. I don't overclock my CPU's so I saved a few bucks. My FSX runs great.

AMD 4x and 6x core processors are just as good and cost less. Couple with an ATI Radeon HD6750 and you'll get outstanding performance. CPU and GPU opinions are all personnel and rarely does anyone have actual experience with both in a side by side comparison. Research tech reviews and look at the bench marks values in those reviews to get the best idea how they compare.

i7-2600k seems to be the way to go right now. Pair that up with a GTX 570 [and, of course, quality other components] you should have a pretty awesome FSX machine.

I run an i7-2600k and a GTX 470 and have FSX just about maxed (and locked externally at 30 fps). It rarely struggles or drops too far below that fps benchmark. But, I would say that a HUGE amount of FSX's performance depends on how you set it up so be sure to follow the many guides out there -- From initial Windows installation to FSX.cfg tweaking, there are a lot of variables besides your hardware that can effect "smooth" performance.

AMD does NOT come anywhere close to Intel clock-for-clock. Those who opted for the non-k version of the sandy bridge are suckers, since its so easy to reach 4+ ghz on DEFAULT voltage..

Right now, the best FSX performance will come from a 2500k (the 2600k has hyperthreading, which FSX does NOT utilize, so it's a waste of money), GTX5xx series cards (460+ will do), and 4GB or more of 1600mhz RAM with a latency of 8 or lower.

Yeah sorry AMD fans, I was a huge AMD fan until I started Simming more seriously, quickly threw out my AMD for an E6850 (yes thats how long ago) I was doing awsome with fs2004 with add-ons and scenery add-ons and the likes. I was out of the game for a few years due to certain circumstances. This is why I needed some real examples from other simmers as far as CPU since FSX is CPU needy. On a sad note, hundreds of dollars if not thousands of add-ons to say goodbuy to and finally switch to FSX. Another quicky, what do you guys think TrackerIR, good addition?

The only real advantage the i7 would have over the i5 in FSX is if you were running alot of background processes the extra 4 hyperthreads would help out. Either one will work if your not

Well im running an amd phenom 2 x4 with 8 gig of ram and an nvidia gtx 560 card and am running fsx just great!! Getting 60 to 80 fps at all times during flight at almost all on high settings. Very Very happy! I must add though I had this same set up but was running an ati 5750 and decided to make the switch to nvidia and boy what a difference!!! no more system freezes much smoother running displays and just perfect, so oi would go with the nvidia for your rig!!

I had a AMD X6 1100T BE. It was nice, but not intel nice. At stock speeds a i5 2500k was about 10 fps more than mine (mine is the X6 1075T). I was hoping that AMD's new bulldozer CPU would be a game changer, but it's a disappointment. I'm going to get myself an i5 2500K.

Intel i7 2600 all the way. I get a fairly smooth 25-40 FPS with most settings on high, I think only my RAM and HDD let me down.

# Intel Core i7 2600 - 3.4GHz, 8 threads, 35-50*C, 8MB cache.
# 8GB ASint Tech RAM - 667MHz, 1.5V, Dual Channel (I know, slow DDR3 RAM, its from an OEM PC and I'll change it when I have some £££)
# ASUS nVidia GeForce GTX 285 - 1GB GDDR3, 700MHz Engine, 2.6GHz Memory, awesome card for only £40
# 2TB WD Caviar Green - Suprising performance for a 5,900RPM hard disk biggrin
