Due to my failure to identify the issue which is causing FSX to run at greatly reduced performance as well as its recent proclivity for crashing and freezing, I will be removing the entire game from my hard drive. I have taken care to back up the majority of the files which I've modified (Airplanes, Modules, Effects, WoAI, etc.), yet have been unable to locate the files which pertain to the log book that is maintained by the game and catalogues every flight made, as well as the file that pertains to the control settings and hotkeys. If anyone here can identify either of these two important files I would be hugely appreciative, as it would probably save me at least two hours of otherwise necessary reconfiguration time. Thanks for reading.

Hi Jeff,

For the hotkey settings go here: C:\Users\<YOURUSERNAMEHERE>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\Controls - you must have hidden folders showing.

For the logbook, as well as saved flight plans go here: C:\Users\<YOURUSERNAMEHERE>\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files, and look for LOGBOOK.BIN

good choice on the uninstalling part...take it from me, reinstall fs9 and run a flight simulator that is fun, stable, and can enjoy all the eye candy you desire without massive impacts to frame rates....LONG LIVE FS9!!!!!!!! wink

Jeff, I would give it another chance .....I'm sure you have a system that can run FSX but have you modified the FSX. cfg with the needed updates? Do you have Acceleration or SP1 and SP2? Did you look in the event view what was making FSX to crash?! Do you have UIAutomationcore.dll in your main FSX folder?

Jared, I haven't entirely lost hope in the prospect of restoring FSX to full functionality. It may sound a tad juvenile but the game has been an enormous part of my life for the past year or so and I have come too far to allow my frustration and limited technical skills to compromise what was and should continue to be an engaging, educational and entertaining experience.

Vincenzo, I suppose I should have stated my intentions more clearly in my original post, but I do intend to reinstall FSX in the hope that it will spare me the problems which have thus far incapacitated the game. You have made some excellent suggestions, which leads me to believe that you would be well disposed to perhaps offer some expert advice on how to best remediate the issues which I'm currently experiencing. I would prefer to avoid having to reinstall the game completely, as there are many payware products included in the Aircraft files which cannot be preserved by merely copying and pasting over. I do have acceleration and I believe that any required updates have been included in that version of the game. FSX consistently crashes approximately 20-40 minutes into my flight, regardless of the current viewpoint I'm observing from and likewise regardless of what I happen to be doing at the time in terms of systems/controls interactions. I don't understand the implications of the UIAutomationcore.dll file you refer to but after having reviewed the contents of my main fsx folder I can tell you that it is not there. Thank you very much for your helpful post.

Vincenzo, my results as per the tweaking/tuning tool were as follows:

You don't have a BufferPools section!, adding optimized settings.
HIGHMEMFIX was added to your config!
ALLOW_SHADER_30=1 has been added to make FSX Shader 3 compatible
Aircraft shadows removed for performance. Use Conservative to prevent this change.
Your FIBER_FRAMETIME_FRACTION was set to 0.2! If you don't like this change use Conservative mode. Your TextureMaxLoad and SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT values will help prevent blurries.
Adjusting TextureMaxLoad to 12 based on your hardware.
SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT has been added to your configuration to prevent blurries.
Your Water resolution have been adjusted to prevent white texture flashes.
SmallPartRejectRadius have been added to your config for performance
Adjusting SOUND_LOD for improved performance when using AI sounds.
Removing overlay tips to avoid graphics corruption.
We suggest to try setting FPS to unlimted inside FSX, and use an EXTERNAL FPS limiter. You'll experience a massive performance increase. Download the limiter here

SHould that appear as a line in the cfg file? I didn't see it anywhere so should I just add that myself?

I will email you the file now but will you need the text file as well? Also, you should know that these issues didn't manifest until recently, in fact I've been playing FSX for several years now and only occasionally (perhaps once a month) had I experienced any crashes or freezing. My system was infected with some type of virus that had the effect of hiding many of my program files which prompted me to seek assistance from Best Buy. After the machine was returned to me it performed flawlessly with the important exception of fsx, which has not been the same since my computer was returned. That's the back story on my current issues and I hope it may be of some help to you. Thank you very much for your generous assistance sir, I'll email that file in the next few minutes.

I don't know whether it will have any bearing on your assessment and possible modification of the cfg file but I'm running fsx on Win7 with service pack 1, have 6 gigs of memory, a 64 bit OS and am using an ATI Radeon HD 5800 series.

It is a quad and a real beast if I don't say so myself. FSX has taxed my sytem before but typically only when I'm in taxi, t/o, or landing phase in some place like ATL or ORD, since WoAI has a very strong presence at those locations. But, as you say, it really has to be an issue with one of the program files. If all else fails, I've come to the point where I can accept a reinstall if absolutely necessary. Thanks again for all your help.

I know, but it is time consuming, tedious and may result in a recurrence of the same issue. Furthermore, I don't have the acceleration pack (it with my brother) so I would only be able to install the standard version, although I believe the only differnce is a few extra aircraft. If you could look at that cfg file and tell me what you think before I go ahead with a reinstall I would really appreicate it.

My suggestion is to try to make a couple of flights with this configuration and see what happen!

Jeff send me your.cfg text file ..try one more flight and if crashes look in the event viewer and let me know what made FSX to crash.
