Hello. I've been attempting to restore fsx to its previously functioning status for the past two weeks now yet have been unsuccessful. I must apologize in advance for the lengthiness of this post, but the back story and details necessitate providing a good deal of information.
Approximately two weeks ago my computer was infected with a virus which had the effect of obscuring and hiding icons as well as program files. I unwisely sought assistance from the Best Buy Geek Squad which managed to restore my system to near full functionality, with the important exception of fsx. When the computer was returned to me I tried running fsx only to find that the screen was experiencing some type of momentary lapsing for lack of a better word which would cause very brief pausing perhaps a second or less in terms of time. This pausing/lapsing occurred consistently and regardless of the complexity or intensity of the graphics being rendered at that particular time. I considered this to be a minor annoyance at first but soon discovered that I could not play the game for more then 40-60 minutes without it either crashing to Windows or freezing. Obviously the stunted visual effects and the crashing of fsx are related. Pursuant to advice I received from some of my gracious fellow DVA pilots here, I consulted Geek Squad initially, which unfortunately did not produce positive results. After attempting to address the problem myself, I entered into email correspondence with one of our resident fsx technical gurus who reviewed some of my program files and suggested a good deal of changes. Once more, none of these alterations had any effect on the unusual behavior of the game. Last night I had a friend of mine who works as an IT executive examine my system and after having done so he advised me that the issues I was experiencing were not a product of any inconsistencies with the system itself but rather were inherent to the program.
Finally in desperation, I completely removed all fsx files from my hard drive and completed a fresh install this morning. To my immeasurable dismay, I have discovered that the game is behaving in the same manner as before. I should mention also that the screen only seems to experience the strange lapses when I run fsx in tandem with ACARS, yet the game will crash or freeze regardless of whether ACARS is running. Furthermore, its not a memory issue as I have 6 gigs of RAM, Win 7, 64 bit graphics and an ATI HD 5800 card.
I love playing fsx and have really enjoyed being a part of the DVA community. For me this is a great, if sometimes distracting hobby that I would really hate to have to part with. I implore anyone out there who has a high level of technical expertise and knowledge of fsx program files to please offer whatever advice you can. My last remaining option is to take the machine back to the guys at Best Buy who's efforts apparently resulted in creating these problems in the first place and I am therefore extremely reluctant to resort to that contingency. If I can't find a viable solution to this problem it is very likely that my simming days will end. Again, I apologize for the very lengthy post and I thank you for reading.
