I was one of the very first "kids" to get a computer. I got my first PC when I was 9 or 10, and I'm now in my early 30s. My first involvement with online communities was at 14, back when 2400 baud modems were fast and we thought it was really cool to send an e-mail from Toronto to Europe for "free" in only 2 days or so.
The reason I mention this is that online activities got me involved with a lot of adults at a young age, as well as getting me into programming as a hobby and a livelihood. One of the aspects of DVA that motivates me a lot is providing the same kind of opportunities for our younger members that I received through my own online hobby activities almost 20 years ago. (Darn that makes me feel old!) Our goal at DVA and AFV is to provide a positive, friendly atmosphere for pilots of all ages. Looking at the "What do you do for a living" thread indicates that we're succeeding.
My motivation towards keeping things "family-friendly" is not to spare our younger members from the wordly things around them. Instead, my goal is to ensure that DVA can be something that you can show your parents when they ask why you're on the computer at all waking hours, and that they can be comfortable knowing that this web site, at least, isn't a hotbed of perverts and weirdos like the rest of the Internet.
I just spent a little bit of time adding an RSAC/IRCA rating tag to the DVA2006 site to adequately tag our content, ensuring it provides a proper representation of the stuff that is posted here. I'm curious to hear from our younger members (ie. under 18) as to their experiences with Delta Virtual. What knowledge do your parents have of this site, and how can we make the experience better for you, and for them? Are there concerns? How can they be alleviated?
Cheers!

I could write a whole freakin essay about this topic haha.. ok 16 years old here ...
In the most general terms I could tell u this:
1. Believe it or not, before I joined this VA, my English was like ..... very vague, I could understand others, but I couldn't really express myself. Since I came here, I've improved my English to such degree that I'm starting to learn my 3rd language, German, considering that my English's way further than the necessary. I could say that I'm at 90-95% of it. Before I came here: 65-70% the highest.
2. I've made a bunch of great friends all around the world. Some of them are even greater persons, and can be better friends that some people you get to know in real life. Even though you can't "interact" with them, there they are. It's very cool to know people from the all around the world. Actually, one of the requierements of the high school program I get is to create "internationalization", meaning that we have to expand our "world" to the rest of the planet or something like that, the point is that this has hleped me to success in that requierement.
3. This has helped me to determine what I wanna do with my life. Looks like I live for aviation. There's nothing I like more than this.
4. Learning "how to fly a plane" has been awesome. Even though you can't compare it to real life flying, this could save me tons of hours of study and money. Also, this makes one of the best and most original hobbies out there
5. This hobby and specially the VA was some kind of a "refugee" for me when I injured my column playing tennis. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't do a single sport withouth suffering the most awful pain you can imagine. Flying, from where I see it, has kept me out of other "hobbies" , that could have been hanging out all day long, smoking or drinking, or just doing nothing! My column is doing great now, and currently I play tennis again, but I haven't quit my hobby =P
6. My mom (I live only with her) is perfectly aware of this website since the time I joined it. She's NOT worried at all about the contents, nor if the language used is innapropriate (common, we all swear in real life LOL) She even likes planes since the time I started to fly hahah. Also, she thinks that it's a very original concept on the Net.
I think that's all I can remember for now, what a speech huh? =P
cheers!

Interesting question Luke. While I am not a youngster I wanted to post a reply to get this back at the top and hopefully get some more input.

I'm not a "younger member" (blah! 29 yrs old) but I did want to comment on the younger members here. I have the utmost respect for everyone in this airline but especially the younger members as they really set the bar showing great respect to others and having a very mature attitude. I've seen other airline forums where this wasn't the case.

Luke,
I am fourteen years old, is that young enough LOL. I have learned so much from DVA then any other airline, it is the inly thing that gets me through the day at school. Cant wait to come home and fly! I have meet a some friends through DVA, and it has made me think about what I want to do in life, a commerical pilot. My parents are aware in a way, that dont really pay attention but anyways. I was wandering about a formal bidding system? Also I think it has an amzing. There is no other VA i rather fly for. Last thing is that how is it coming with the sigs?
THanks A lot,

Well im 16 here. Been with DVA for about 2 and a half years. Everything is great here. I have tried alot of different airlines just to see how they stacked up and i can ensure you non of them have come close. I will admit some of them have some cool feautres like United with their dispatch system and BAV with their acars. But it never fails that this water cooler is really what sets this airline apart and has kept me from never even thinking about leaving this airline. This place truly does feel family like, i love the maturity level we have but yet we can still laugh and have fun with each other. You can come here and talk about anything you want, even if its not aviation related and just have a good old time with some folks that are crazy aviation nerd and are as proud of it as i am!

Matthew has made a good point. I have not been with this airline very long, but Just reading the water cooler tells me something. Keep up the good work DVA!
Rick
P.S. I am not young by no means, but I have no problem with younger members as long as they remain cool.

Great Question. I'm 13 and have only been here two moths. Since my first time here i felt welcome as i had to get a few tips from others. I have learned so much here and have been obsessed with flying ever since.

I'm also 13, and I found this a very nice atmosphere. I used to fly for United Virtual (I think I'm still active there... Who knows), and I have learned a lot about myself and flying. I am working on my private pilots licencse (even though I can't solo until I'm 16, and get my certificate at 17, Bah!) I really love this airline, and when I am old enough (21) to get a job, I'll definitley consider Delta. I really like the professionalism here, but the atmosphere is really relaxed, not uptight and such. I really love it here!

Well I know this thread is pretty old, but I'm new here so I figured I'd comment. I'm currently 25 going on 15 (hey I'm just a big kid). Anyways, I've been apart of other gaming organizations but I would have to say this takes more maturity than other organizations. It's not a shoot'em up game its a simulator, and those who play this aren't the typical "Counterstrike" players...if you know the game...you know what I mean.
I will have to say I am amazed at the overall maturity of ALL the members including young and *cough cough* young at heart. I got into this simulator with a lot of assistance from one of our members Kyle Weber...who also is a VATSIM Denver Controller. He more than half a decade younger than me and I swear he is at minimum a decade more mature. I'm just happy I've gotten into this, because it brings a whole new level of fun to my gaming/sim experience.
I look forward to seeing all of you in the skies...and if you got a second while your cruising...drop me a message on VATSIM, and let's set up a flight!
