So, my mom has apparently decided that I deserve a new laptop (I'm 25 by the way :P) and has insisted on buying me a top of the line laptop (or desktop computer I guess). Usually it seems like people ask questions like "what type of rig can I get for 800 bucks?" or something similar but thats not really my problem since apparently my mother is a very kind woman. So what would you buy if money wasn't really an issue? I don't want an Alien ware or anything. Just a new high end HP or a sony or something like that.

My problem is that since I built my own computer in 2003, I have not kept up with the times and I now know nothing about compatability of graphics cards, MOBOs, Windows 7, quad core ?! I don't know!!! If I could just get some ideas of what people would buy if they had around $1,500.00 to get a new laptop for FSX and possibly Free/Open Falcon. Are there any graphics cards I will have compatibility issues with? What about Windows 7 compatibility? I own the LVLD767, PMDG 747 and Leonardo MD80. These are the top three paywares that I am worried about working seeing as how I spent about 200.00 bucks on them. I also plan on getting CS 707 after I get the new system. So

Also, I purchased my lvld and pmdg planes years ago on bank accounts that I no longer have and cards that are long expired. How can I transfer them to my new computer? I know most of you probably think I'm crazy for not jumping on this offer months ago but in reality the huge amount of work setting up FSX all over again and tweaking and installing and hoping that it all works out has kinda been the put off for me...

So yeah!

Like how does this look? Anything you would change or upgrade or avoid?

IMO I'd get a desktop, as you're going to get far better performance with FSX from a desktop... To give you an idea my current set up is:

Intel Core i5 2400 @ 3.10Ghz
Nvidia GTX 460 1GB OC Graphics Card
4 GB DD3 Ram
Running it with Windows 7 Ultimate...

With this setup I'm getting around 20 fps in the PMDG 747 at Aerosoft Paris... which is quite a frame intensive scenery... Hope this helps you a little

If you're only talking about FS, there's no way I would get laptop as the performance is worse and they're very difficult to upgrade. Plus the screen is small.

Two big things that stick out at me on your rig is the 5400 rpm hard drive and the processor. This is good for a laptop I guess, but I wouldn't for a second consider running FSX on a laptop.

If your mom is giving you a gift like this I'd really consider building your own or at the very least buying a custom rig. An "HP or something" is built for people who dont really know better and certainly not built for FSX.

Ok. I was sort of leaning towards a desktop anyways. FSX runs decent on my current laptop, but I also promised myself I'd never get another laptop again :))

Ok so, you guys recomend custom building my own? Or are there any "name brand" ones you would recommend? If I have to build it myself, I'll probably need a lot more help :))

I would say build it yourself as you save some money that can be spent on hardware. When I am looking at a build, I go to iBuyPower (http://www.ibuypower.com/) to look at different setups and options then hit NewEgg, TigerDirect and Provantage for pricing

I'd definitely build it myself... SLI/Crossfire is a waste of money because FS is never going to use the capacity of the 2 GPU's... the i7 2600k would be you're best bet for a CPU as its got a high clock speed and plenty of room for overclocking which will benefit FSX greatly as the higher the clock speed, the better FS is going to run...

That would be a waste... Why would you need anything above 30 fps (that's what the human eye see's)? And over-clocking to 6.667GHz? That's a ton! I don't think that's necessary either...

I have an i7 920 2.67 GHz - dual quadcore and 12GB of RAM (not overclocked) and I get about 40 fps on FSX with REX and other add-ons. Computer that is direct from Costco. lol

Aww, my friend. A computer is outdated before you carry it out of the store. At the rate technology is changing, best to get the absolute best machine you can afford. I made that mistake on my last two. While it may be a waste for FSX, it it worth it for other stuff and your future!

Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing computer, but I don't see why you would need EVERY one of those upgrades just to get the extra 200fps that you can't even notice...

You can get a much less agressive machine. The beauty of DSO is you get a custom machine that has some awesomeness put into it. Can't go wrong!

In my opinion, an Intel i5 2500k will make FSX run very well. You don't need the hyper threading that the i7 gives you, as FSX cannot utilize it. I would go with the i5, Asus P8P67 pro MB, a SATA 7200 rpm HD, 8 GB Corsair Vengeance ram, and nVidia GTX 580 video card. You can easily OC the i5 to 4.5 Ghz, and FSX will be unbelievable.

The fact is that even if you physically can't notice those extra 200 fps, it still makes the experience that much better. Plus when you add add ons that lower the fps, you will not end up getting 15 fps instead of 30, you will get 150 instead of 250. Overall, the experience will be Better, even if you can't notice it.

Generally, you shouldn't. When I installed a new version of FSX, my Level-D installed right from the wrapper, no repurchase needed.

When I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 I purchased an external hard drive and put all my FSX stuff onto it. I kept the serial numbers from my purchases and I was good to go.

Hey,

Try going to www.digitalstormonline.com and look a their desktops. They are not cheap, but they are beautiful. I am hopefully getting one in the next couple of months, but my friend has one and he Runs FSX on it and gets an average of 240+ FPS out out of cities 270+ FPS over water and about 180FPS in cities. He has PMDG 747, 737 and MD-11, LEVELD 767, QW757 and almost every scenery available for cities and whatnot, it runs great.

These are the specs he gave me for his computer:

Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core)
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z (Intel Z68 Chipset) (Features Intel Quick Sync Technology)

Mouse: Razer Deathadder Gaming Mouse (High-Speed Gaming grade)
Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty

His CPU is over clocked to 6.667 GHZ.

Hope that helps.

His 2600k is NOT overclocked to 6.667ghz.. I'm sorry but your friend is very wrong. And FSX WILL - NOT - BENEFIT from SLI or Crossfire.

Ok so I checked out that DSO sight... it was exactly what I was looking for. I'm far too dumb to do it from scratch like on Newegg. :))

So here is what I ended up with. I have three main questions about performance that could potentially save around 140 bucks. I marked them with *'s smile

Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master HAF 932
Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish
Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish
Processor: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core)
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (New B3 Revision) (Does Not Support SLI)
System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Dominator DHX (High-Performance)
Power Supply: 750W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) <------------------------------------------------ The site suggested this over the default 800W from the same company for a slightly higher price. Should I save the few bucks and just get the 800W ?? ***

Expansion Bay: - No Thanks
Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition)
Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks
Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks
Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks
Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x)
Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks
Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)
Video Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB (Includes PhysX Technology) (EVGA Edition) <----- chose this (93 dollars cheaper) than what they suggested which was 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 1GB Includes PhysX Technology EVGA Edition. Will I notice any difference at all? I'm trying to be reasonable and if I don't need it then I don't want to get it. ***

Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio
Extreme Cooling: Standard Factory Heat-sink and Fan (Not Recommended for CPU Overclocking) <------------ thought about stage one cooling for an extra 30 bucks. ***
H20 Tube Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected
Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans
Internal Lighting: - No Thanks
Enhancements: - No Thanks
Chassis Mods: - No Thanks
Noise Reduction: - No Thanks
LaserMark: - No Thanks
CPU Boost: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz
Graphics Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s)
Memory Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory
OS BOOST: - FREE: Yes, Disable and tweak all of the non-crucial services on the operating
Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition)
Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD)

I left off the rest because it was just a bunch of "no thanks".

So if I get the things I marked above with *'s it will be about 1440 bucks (stage 1 cooling, 750w PS, and the GeForce GTX 560 1GB) Or, I could get the alternates as mentioned above and have it run at about 1300.00. With the specs above will I even notice the $140.00 difference?

Is there anything I should fix? I don't really mean upgrade in terms of performance, but more along the lines of either cooling, or power supply. Something that will effect the overall health of the machine. I also do not plan on overclocking it at all. If it will run at 3.30 that will be fine with me.

800w is more than enough, you can even get away with running a 650w. the GTX 550 is not a great card, the GTX 460 would be a better buy at the price, ditto for the 560 too.

NO CHANCE hes getting these frames. Not to mention 6.6 without nitrogen cooling. You really expect us to believe this? Kinda like how you remember flying on the concorde when you were young..... ummm nuff said. Build your own machine dont waste the money on SLI unless you are going to do some "gaming" and not simming

LOL @ MICHAEL !!

Well the problem is apparently solved!!!!!
When I went to show my mom she was like WHAT? WHY DIDN'T YOU GET THE BEST OF EVERYTHING?

So, I upgraded to the i7 2600K 3.40GHz and the 750W PS, because it had 5 stars on Amazon, and hey, 98 good reviews can't be wrong! I went with the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) for no other reason than thats what the guy above me used, so I figured it was good. I also upgraded to a wireless internet port (because I almost forgot its not a laptop... I haven't had a desktop in YEARS). Internet Access: Wireless PCI-E 802.11n Up to 300Mbps (Supports 802.11n/g/b) (Model: ASUS PCE-N15)
And then I ended up with this video Card. GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB (PhysX Technology) (Overclocked EVGA Edition). I couldn;t tell from the comment above if the 560 was good or bad so I just got it. It was the highest priced of the mid end cards.

All in all with shipping and everything else included we're pushing $2,000. Not quite, but close.

I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL IN THE INCREDIBLY FAST AND SHARP LOOKING SKIES VERY SOON! And hopefully lag free too.

Ok guys, I just repeated exactly what my friend told me, nothing more. I know nothing about computers and don't know about what is going to get this, and what is going to get that. Please don't batter down on me for something that is not mine. My friend told me in person his specs and I believed him, they are not mine, and frankly I don't know what half the stuff means. So if t's wrong, then it's wrong, but it's not mine.

the gtx 560ti is a good card smile I was saying if you were on a budget and getting the 550 for that reason, then the 460 would be a better choice because it can be had for $120 after rebates.
