Guys, I need some help. My flight sim was working perfectly fine earlier today....I did two flight with ACARS, and no problems, but now, my FS won't even open! It gets to the little blue start-up screen, then nothing! what's going on?!

Consult windows event viewer for information regarding program faults. It almost sounds as though something might be blocking the program, do you have any firewalls enabled? Was there anything at all you did to either fsx or windows since the last time the game worked?

Josh, when event viewer opens click on the Windows Logs tab on the left panel, after that then below you will see a tab for Application, click on that and the window in the upper middle of the viewer will render a read out of all errors and messages associated with programs. You'll be looking for actual errors, indicated by a red exclamation mark symbol. Try starting fsx up again right now and then follow these directions and consult the event viewer, looking for associated errors. That way you won't have to sift through other irrelevant messages.

If you can't get it working after making a genuine effort to seek help in the forums, please feel free to utilize our help desk function, located under the "Pilots Lounge" section on the left side of the website. I have two papers to write today and about a hundred pages of academic material to get through, so I won't be able to offer much more help until later tonight.

Go to your main fsx directory, find the Modules folder, inside there will be a document called Fsuipc4.log. That will tell you specifically the nature of the ACARS or fsuipc related problems you're having. If you cannot discern its meaning, copy and paste it to an email and send it to me and I will try to interpret it for you.

Josh, are you running the latest version of fsuipc, or just using what was installed in your modules folder via the ACARS installation? If you don't have it already, I highly recommend you download the most recent version of fsuipc from this website http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html .

Then updating to the current version could potentially be helpful for you. Its a very small download and if it is detrimental in any way (I don't see how it could be), you can just reinstall ACARS with its accompanying version of fsuipc.

It will automatically download, then just run the exe and I think click yes or begin or whatever corresponds with the initial prompt screen. You'll then see the program run through many files and I think it will say something like updated to fsuipc 4.70. You just hit exit or cancel at that time. The key code is not necessary for the freeware version of fsuipc, which is what most of us use.

So here is my process, tell me if i'm correct.
Go to website
Click "FSUIPC 4 4.70)
Click "open"
On the window that opens, double click "Install FSUIPC4"
Click "run"
Then registation comes up, do i close that then and its done, or did i do something wrong?

That sounds like the proper procedure to me. You can easily tell whether it updated you by going back to that Modules folder and referencing the fsuipc4.log. At the top of that document, after you've opened it, it will tell you exactly what version your running.

It looks like the most current version of fsuipc installed correctly based on your fsuipc4.log.

I'm thinking that your ACARS inability to work in tandem with fsx was related to your outdated version of fsuipc. Perhaps not, but we start with the easiet and least obtrusive of remedies and move on to progressively more complicated fixes.

OK I'm at cruise. When you download and install ACARS it should already detect that you have the latest version of fsuipc installed and therefore, it will not alter that installation by attempting to supersede it with an older version (the 4.70 that is inherent to the ACARS download and installation). SO download ACARS, run the installation exe, and just look to see if its attempting to install the older version of fsuipc, if it is you'll see it marked with a checkmark in the fsuipc downloads/installation window and all you have to do is uncheck it, but that shouldn't matter because you've already installed a more recent fsuipc version.

Jeff, it went very well, they said that the problem was ACARS, because of Sim connect. I have Sim connect updated, but I cannot use both ACARS, and all my flight panels from saitek....said Microsoft and Saitek, so that is why I am "flying with no internet"

Glad to hear you're making some progress with them. Your particular problem sounds strangely similar to some of my own, in that the frequency of fsx freezing appears to increase dramatically whenever I fly in conjunction with ACARS. Furthermore, I know for a fact that the Simconnect.dll file has been directly implicated in many of my past freezes. Tell me exactly how they recommended you update simconnect, as I didn't think that was possible without reformatting Windows entirely.

It was not microsoft, it was the Saitek company tech department that I spoke to last night after the issue was "resolved" in microsoft's eyes, I called Saitek due to a problem with my flight panels, and they said something about possibly updating simconnect, but we never folowed through. One more question, since I am no flying ACARS with "no internet connection", would you recommened deleting any FSUIPC files? I know not to delete simconnect, as this is a normal file that comes with fsx according to microsoft. thanks!

Josh, you're beginning to venture beyond the (limited) area of my expertise, but logic and my understanding of the function of those files tells me that you should not delete them. I don't think doing so would negatively affect your ability to fly offline, as you are now obliged to do, but I would recommend maintaining the status quo for now, so long as you're able to successfully complete flights. You could delete them after backing them up and see whether that makes a difference, personally I don't think it will, but why create potentially new problems for yourself when your satisfied with the current situation?

I agree, ACARS works well on short time domestic flights, but when I get to try to go international, it does not work due to the long period of time. I will however attempt to fly an international flight rather soon with "no internet connection", and will let you know how that goes, but for now, everything seems ok.

That sounds awesome Josh! Will you be joining him on that flight or do you mean that you'll be flying it yourself through fsx? Can't say I've ever been on the A330, but I've heard good things about it from my friend who travels to Europe and Asia almost monthly. The biggest thing I've ever been on was a Northwest DC-10, way back in the early 90's.

He will be traveling business, so I will not be onboard with him, although will be flying through fsx. He flies international at least twice per month, as his company is headquarted in Oslo, Norway, but he lives 2.5 miles from KDAB! So his intinterary this week is to his U.S. office in houston
KDAB-KATL-KIAH; KIAH-KATL-KDAB
after that,
KDAB-KATL-LFPG-EDDM;EDDM-KATL-KMCO
then he gets some serious skymiles when he goes
KMCO-KLAX-YSSY-KLAX-RJAA-WSSS-RJAA-KATL-KMCO. That one makes me tired just thinkin about it!

Wow that sounds like an exhausting itinerary. I know for a fact that most people who are subjected to that much air travel eventually begin to disdain the planes they once admired. But then again, pilots never lose their enthusiasm for flight, although that's like saying it's just as boring riding in a car as it is to drive one. I like your plan to "fly" him yourself. My brother and I did the same thing two years ago when our parents fly from DTW to Heathrow.

And good luck on working towards completing the 50 State Club Award. That must be a rather tedious task.

Sorry about the delay in getting back with you Josh, I've been helping my friend move all day. I don't think that fsuipc has anything to do with the problems you're experiencing. I do believe it is more related to files such as simconnect.dll which unfortunately, cannot easily be altered or modified. Fsuipc is a program utility which allows fsx to interface with ancillary programs, such as ACARS or VAFS, if you've ever used it. I have a problem very similar to yours and have tried to work it out over the course of the last 2 months with very limited success. Try making adjustments in the settings, especially with things such as frame rates and cloud draw, as those seriously impact your system performance and over time, may cause the game to crash. Identifying the nature of your problem is foremost however and I urge you to consult both the Windows Event Viewer and the fsuipc4.log for insights into the cause.

Josh, while I know it is extremely tedious, since I've done it innumerable times myself, you're going to have to try to identify the causative factor here. This is a slow and laborious process of elimination that will begin with you flying with ACARS, offline but after having reduced both the cloud draw and the frame rates. If you don't feel like attending to what may end as a crash to desktop, set up the flight before you go to bed and return to it in the morning. If this produces the same results (problems manifest), then we'll try flying without ACARS, just using fsx. Also, there is some information I need from you regarding the nature of your problem. Firstly, does the game freeze or crash out to Windows? Secondly, is fsx exclusively affected or does ACARS likewise freeze or become unresponsive? Furthermore, have you tried to "wait out the freeze" and determine whether it was a temporary lapse or a permanent, unrecoverable freeze? If it's the former, then I suggest you familiarize yourself with the content of this thread, http://forum.avsim.net/topic/263150-fsx-freezes-randomly/ . I myself have contributed to that discussion under the user name "casinoroyal". Please report back to me your findings.

I do not have a flight running at this time, though i do need to go to bed now for an early morning. Although both ACARS and FSX both crash, i do not know which happens first. I have the frame rate set to limit at 98, and the cloud draw set to 3D very dense. And 110 mile draw. I have left a flight going earlier today from KSLc-PANC attempting to obtain alaska, and i left this flight 2 hours before landing, with my GPS open. When i came back 90 minutes later, i found FSX still running with the sound, but the display had stopped, and the GPS said 1:30 till PANC. I exited to the task manager to see what was going on, and it said ACARS and FSX were both "not responding. Do you think along with reducing settings in cloud draw, and frame rate, i should also consult the MODULS folder to delete some FsUipc files, as i will not be using ACARS for a while? Thanks!

I wouldn't necessarily presume that ACARS is the cause of your problem here, although that was initially my own conclusion when I began to experience similar issues. ACARS has proven itself to be a very stable and consistently reliable program, whereas fsx was not well conceived in terms of operating system compatibility, particularly for Windows 7 users. The first thing I would recommend you do is to reduce the cloud draw and frame rates substantially. I know it may not be conducive to optimized performance, but I have a machine with very similar processing capabilities as your own and have been forced to reduce my visual settings dramatically to prevent regular freezing. For now, set cloud draw to either 80 or 70 nm and set the target frame rate for 30. Also, you may not feel inclined to consult that rather lengthy thread I referenced, so I'll summarize its applicability to your own situation for you. The guys on that thread all share a similar dilemma; fsx, when used on a Windows 7 machine freezes at variable intervals, but will inevitably "unfreeze" itself, if enough time lapses. I have experienced this problem myself, especially after completing greater then 2-3 hours of flight time, although when my game does freeze, the intervals are very consistent and typically manifest every 10-15 minutes. If you return to your game tomorrow and it appears as though it is frozen I want you to leave it be and wait about 10-15 minutes, while regularly observing the screen. If it remains frozen, then shut it down via task manager, but if it unfreezes on its own accord, then you'll know that your problem is rooted in the same cause as that which many others experience (including myself).

I wouldn't delete any of those files in the Modules folder, as I don't think that's what is causing the problem here. Furthermore, you'll have to determine if the issues you experience arise only when running fsx in tandem with ACARS, or are endemic to fsx itself. Too many unknowns exist to presume fault on behalf ACARS just yet.

Oh and one more thing: I share your pain Josh, as I can no longer fly flights that last more than 2 hours without almost certain freezing of fsx. Thats why I only fly short to mid-ranged CRJ flights for now, at least until I can partition my hard drive and create a separate section exclusively for fsx. So, you're not the only one who must endure this highly frustrating and very confounding dilemma. Don't lose hope and remain optimistic throughout; I will do whatever I can to help you get back to functional status again.

Implement my suggestions regarding the settings, start a flight in tandem with ACARS, and when or if it freezes allow it about 10-15 minutes to recover. Report back to me your findings and we'll go from there. Good night Josh.

Jeff, just FYI, I am happy to say that ALL the FSUIPC and FSUIPC4 files I could find earlier today, were not found just now when I searched for them after I uninstalled ACARS! I will however, take your advice, and fly an FsDefault aircraft on ACARS tomorrow, and report back, then begin downloading DVA aircraft if I complete my Hawaii flight succesfully.

Josh, regardless of your use of DVA aircraft, the performance or functionality of fsx should not be affected. I personally do not use any of the aircraft associated with the fleet installer on account of my preference for a fully interactive virtual cockpit. Again, I don't think your problem has any relationship to the type of aircraft you're flying with. I think its either a function of a corrupted Windows program file such as simconnect.dll or your systems inability to consistently generate graphics at the currently established settings (hopefully its the latter of these). Good luck with the flight and be sure to turn down the cloud draw and frame rates prior to setting it up.

Jeff, I noticed that in the ACARS download, there is FsUIPC 4.5 something, but in the 747 there was fsuipc 4.7 something....can I do both, or is that why its crashing.

You'll only need fsuipc if you plan to fly fsx in conjunction with an ancillary flight tracking program which interfaces with both the game and the internet. ACARS and VAFS are both examples of programs which will require fsuipc to function properly (or at all). The version of fsuipc you're using shouldn't matter, although as I recommended to you before, you would optimally have the latest version installed which can be found at http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html .

In terms of the fleet installer including various versions of fsuipc that are associated with different aircraft types, I can only surmise that such discrepancies exist due to the different release dates of those aircraft and thus the correspondingly latest version of fsuipc, whatever it was at the time a particular fleet aircraft was developed and made available. Check the Modules folder in your main fsx directory and open the fsuipc4.log to ascertain which version of fsuipc you're using. It should be 4.74, since that preempts the other versions.

To reiterate, you only need a single version of fsuipc to achieve full functionality with programs such as ACARS. While the currency of the version isn't imperative, I recommend you install the latest version, which I believe you've done already.

I have never encountered FSsound before and I don't have such a file on my computer. Based on some limited research it appears as though it is a file associated exclusively with older versions of MS FS.

Sorry to hear of your continuing troubles. Let me ask you this; do you experience any anomalous performance from other programs or games on the computer you're using for fsx? I'm beginning to think this might be something completely irrelevant to fsx or any other ancillary programs. Do you have reputable virus protection software installed? Let me know in the morning or whenever, I'm about ready to jump in my CRJ for a quick hop out to MKE, hopefully without inducing a game freeze.

Morning Jeff, how was your "sober" flight last night?! lol...anyway, long story from flight last night.
I took off and got to cruise as normal, and set it to fly GPS, because I had to go get some quick dinner, but would return about 15 minutes later to my flight attendent (FsPassengers) saying "Captain, we have extreme cabin depreassurization back here....if you do not land soon, some of the passengers will not make it." The reason she was saying this, is because my little brother thought it would be an awsome idea to open my door in flight! So I did not make it from KSLC-KCOD, instead I went to Jackson Hole. So I cancelled that FsPassengers flight, and ACARS log, but will be flying that same leg now to test ACARS with your same settings as it was last night, and I'll report back after flight report submission.

Good luck Josh, let me know what happens. I know that I'm consistently able to complete flights less then 2 hours in duration, its only when I fly beyond that threshold that I encounter the freezing of fsx. I'll be very interested to hear of your results.

Thats great to see Josh! Nice landing by the way. While I can't say definitively without further trials, I'm inclined to believe that the setting adjustment you made had some bearing on your ability to fly as long as you did. Obviously, you'll have to incrementally and individually restore your settings and flight parameter to what they had been prior to the adjustment you made for this last flight. That way we'll be able to easily identify what element is causing the freeze.

Jeff, I am happy where the settings are now with the 30 frame rate and 60 mile cloud. Because of my computers high performance CPU, and GPU, I really didn't see a diference in the performance on the ground or in the air. I will be flying another 5 or so hour flight tomorrow from salt lake to anchorage.

Best of luck and as always, if you experience any recurrence of your fsx freeze issue, don't hesitate to return to this thread or contact me directly, since you have my email. I'm hoping that you'll be flying unhindered long hauls from here on out, but you just never know what surprises fsx has in store for you sometimes.

Jeff, ACARS is horrible to me! It is the factor into my crashes according to that log thing u told me to view. I have unistalled ACARS, and will be flying 100% offline now. If it eventually comes to where I need to leave DVA due to not "proving" that I am flying, so be it, but I cannot take these crashes anymore!

Everyone, we will see if ACARS is the problem or not, because I am flying an international flight now from KLAX-YSSY in fleet downloaded 747. ACARS, FSUIPC, or any other add-on except the 747, that does not come with the boxed FSX, is not installed on my computer.

Josh, sorry for my recent absence, I've been tutoring my fiancée's daughter. As for your recurrent and seemingly inescapable problem which you allege derives from ACARS, my friend Vincenzo is correct in advising you to fly disconnected so as to avoid the potential conflict you seem to have between ACARS and fsx. Either that, or do what I had been doing recently, and set up a flight, connect with ACARS, begin fsx, disconnect from ACARS after you're airborne and then reconnect after completion of the flight so that you can file an online PIREP.

To concur with the assertion of Vice President Kolin, I must add that I'm still not entirely convinced that your problem is an exclusive function of ACARS. I have experienced a very similar pattern of problems and I am almost certain they are caused my some faulting Windows program .dll file that was corrupted as a consequence of a virus. Either that, or the dilettante's over at Best Buy failed to completely expunge the virus in the first place. Prior to contact with the virtual "infectious material", fsx and ACARS served me well, performing without incident for a period of about 9 months. So again, I too doubt that ACARS is the cause of your problem, although it may seem that way, since you cannot precisely identify whatever program file is actually malfunctioning.

So then I really need someone to explain this to me.
Last night, I attempted a flight from KATL-FAJS connected to ACARS with the 747, and only got about 1 hour of flight time.
Now, I am flying the 747 from KLAX-YSSY with no ACARS or FSUIPC or any add-on other than the 747 installed, and I have been going for 3+ hours now.
That makes me VERY convinced that ACARS, or FSUIPC is the problem.

I know that logic and your experiences would reinforce the conclusion that ACARS is responsible for your problems here, but rest assured my friend, I made the same faulty deduction. The fact is that ACARS requires an array of program files to function properly and correctly interact with fsx. Some of these are Windows based files (.dll's), others are endemic to the fsuipc installation. If ACARS isn't working, or causing crashes for fsx, all that really tells me is that one of those necessary files is either missing, corrupted or affected by a virus. ACARS itself is a very reliable and stable program. At this point I would suggest that you either create a help desk issue and explain your problem with the utmost specificity, email our Vice President, Mr. Kolin, requesting information on which support files ACARS draws upon and interacts with (since he created the program) or fly offline. Finally, you could do as I am planning to do and partition your hard drive if you have the money or necessary technical expertise, or know someone who can do it for you. That, or reformatting Windows are the only actions you can take which will guarantee with near certainty that all problems will be fixed as their root causes will be expunged. Email me personally if you have any questions or concerns.

You know what, after I finish this flight without any ACARS or anything, I will re-download ACARS, and fly an international with it, because I am thinking now that FsPassengers might have been a problem too. What do you think about that?

I don't know enough about FS Passengers to give you an intelligent response. I will say that next time you fly using ACARS disable any other third party, ancillary software that you might otherwise run in conjunction with fsx. Obviously, that's the only way you'll be able to eliminate possible causes. Also, if Build 99 of ACARS doesn't seem to work for you, you can always try using the older version 1, which is still available and fully functional, although to reiterate, I don't think the problem is specific to ACARS itself.

I've decided to bring ACARS back for the following reasons.
I got 13 hours into my flight from KLAX-YSSY, then stupid thing crashed.
Dispatch and fuel loading
If I do crash, I can re-load my flight from the last position, and keep going.
Thanks for your help all, because I have come to this solution, I will no longer need any help...hopefuly.

Update:
FsPassenger no longer in use; unistalled.
ACARS/FSUIPC v.4.751 or whatever the latest is: installed, and in use.
If FSX crashes, I will restart all my flight panels, and restart my computer, then load the flight to its last location via the "load" button in fsx where ACARS will save my flights every 30 seconds! Problem solved.

Good evening Jeff,
So how did you resolve your issues? Do you now have a different version of Windows, or still WIN7? Also, if you could explain to me how I might be able to accomplish the same procedure you took, that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Credit of my fix goes to...Jeff's friend! And jeff for his great input, but it looks like it is going well so far. on a flight from KATL-PHNL...the only thing that I have a question on is when I try to use certain views on the aircraft, it will be just a blank white screen. Any ideas?

Great to hear that fsx is working again for you Josh. Regarding the views, which specific views are not functioning properly? You might want to check the aircraft.cfg and make sure the view section data is there and didn't somehow get corrupted in the transference process.
