As winter has arrived (at least here at DTW), so has the perpetual annoyance of the ridiculous ground snow effect which one experiences whenever in taxi phase. It's a nice idea but the fact that no other aircraft visually display the effect and more importantly, the resemblance of what I assume is supposed to be snow to either dirt/dust or some kind of smoke. I'm sure its in the effects folder somewhere but I wouldn't really know how to identify the file. Does anyone have any ideas on how to put a stop to this highly unrealistic and downright silly effect?

Open the aircraft.cfg, look for the line under [effects] that says something about snow or dirt or something, and slash it out (//"effect liine with ugliness"). That way you can turn it back on if you want to.

Alternatively, you could try looking for an updated effect file maybe on avsim that looks better.

I too have those same issues as I am based out of DTW. Let me know what you come up with. Taxiing is a pain and checking to see if another aircraft is landing that didn't report (that never happens right?) is next to impossible. Is KDTW the only ICAO that this problem is occuring at?

Matt, thank you for your insightful assistance. I will certainly identify the proper line in the aircraft.cfg file and disable the gear weather effects that way.

David, my issues are not exclusively a function of my ground activities at DTW, but occur elsewhere as well. I believe that this effect is related to the prevailing weather conditions at a given location and I have deduced that these conditions must typically be below a certain temperature threshold and generally include some form of precipitation.

I don't really know if this graphical issue has any bearing on the flight paths or approach of other aircraft, though as you suggest, it may. Are you referring to ai traffic (default or add-on) or live pilot interactions?

Matt, I've added the slashes (//) before the lines which correspond with "dirt, water and sparks", yet am still experiencing this annoying graphic. Is there a way to identify the actual texture or effect in either of those folders and perhaps delete or remove it? Thanks.

OK, well now it seems as though this effect isn't just limited to the 737. The crj-700 also kicks up dirt, regardless of whether its snowing/raining. Doe anyone know if I can just delete some file in the effects folder to get rid of this nonsesnse once and for all?

After a little trial and error I've managed to identify the troublesome file that has been really ruining my realism for the past week or two (at least whenever I looked at the plane during taxi). For anyone who wants to know, it is the fx_wtrspray series of files and there are 3 in all. Just remove them from the effects folder and you will never have to endure the stupidity of smoke emanating from your tires again.
