It would appear to me that Clouds have a major effect on FPS, around JFK in a Virtual Cockpit my system can be a low as 8 FPS but if I switch to an area with clear skies then it goes upto around 40-50, is this right and are their weather programs out their that offer frame rate friendly but realism also

Flying through clouds always makes an effect in your fps, especially the heavy one ...you also need to take in consideration your comp specs and your FS settings!

Play with your cloud draw distance (60's a good number) and if its still bad consider lowering the 3D cloud percentage in the weather settings

Clouds are the biggest FPS hit unfortunately. I would do what James suggested, which is what I did when FPS were an issue. Keep playing with the 3D cloud percentage and the cloud draw distance until FPS become good enough. Good luck!

Jamie - Also if you have Active Sky, once you have set the cloud draw distance in FS to 60, set the visibility in Active Sky to 59 or lower. Then you wont experience 'pop-up'.

Also - look for lower resoultion clouds at places like Avsim etc. Lowering the res will put less strain on your GPU, and there is not much noticeable difference.

If your Anti-aliasing is set outside of FS try lowering this too.

As Kyle mentioned experiment until you hit the sweet spot where the trade off in image quality is worth the gain in performance.

It is an effort getting the right balance thats for sure, returned to the 757 today Al, I enjoyed the 74 but I find I handle the rocket better and really enjoyerd my time with it before, also still am so in love with the QW 757 aswell as the fact that it's more realistic to fly for Delta with this aircraft, I may get ratings in the 767 as I believe most 757 pilots are able to fly the 767.

As far as clouds go I've turned the 3D settings down to about 40, luckily coming into Atlanta this afternoon was clear skies so got decent frames coming in, I noticed though before I loaded ACARS I was getting 40FPS at Vegas but as soon as I fired up, it went back to 15-20

Thats a pretty hefty hit for ACARS. You may want to do some more testing just to be sure ACARS is causing issues, if so post something in the Development forum. I'm sure Luke will help.
