Sorry if this has been asked...
I am trying to determine if I will get better net performance on my hard drive speed if I use my SSD in SRT mode -- or -- just use the SSD for my OS and popular programs. I have 1TB HDD and 64G SSD. 1. Should I use part all of the SSD as SRT cache, 2. Partition the SSD, with let's say 32 G for SRT cache and 32G for OS, 3. Or forget the SRT and just use the full SSD for OS and popular programs?

SRT works with a HDD, it uses the SSD as a buffer and data flows more quickly.

True. So I am trying to determine if I would be better to put Windows 7 on the solid state drive which will leave about 30 GB for other programs and use the HDD for storage. I am thinking I can not fit both Windows and FSX on the 64 GB SSD and still have some breathing room. The other option is to setup the SSD with Smart Response Technology, use 32 GB for that cache and put all the programs on the HDD. Windows will be slower than option 1, but maybe the others like FSX will benefit.

Thanks for the response David.

What I'd do....

64GB SSD - Operating System
1 TB HDD - Storage

AND

120 GB SSD - FSX/Add-Ons/Rise of Flight/Lock-On, etc.

My set up is like this: (no SRT...couldn't afford it yet.)

i7 990x Overclocked to 4.1 Ghz, Corsair H60 Liquid Cooling (*never gets above 60C)
Gigabyte G1.Assassin Moherboard
24GB RAM 1680Mhz
120 GB SSD - O.S.
1 TB HDD 7200RPM, Sata3
GTX580 Classified Video Card

I get 100fps with ORBX Pacific NW, using Add-On aircraft.

My windows experience score is 7.8

Just my .02

Nice setup... I like the additional SSD option.
Right now, I have windows 7 and FSX on the 64 GB SSD and there is not enough room. Next, I'll save for the 120 GB SSD and move FSX over.
The rig I just build is i7 2600K, not overclocked yet. Same H60 cooling system, 16 GB mem, Radian 6870, etc. By the way, which options settings lets me view the fps on screen in fsx?
Thanks

Yeah, it's true...how do you do a screen shot? I had to spend about an hour tweaking the N-Vidia settings to get it to work like this. Smoothest ride I've ever taken. FPS jumps around a little, between 90-100 fps is usual. Only 1 processor core is being used by FSX, a least it looks that way. There was a great article last year on how to increase you frame rates just by changing some settings. It was in PC pPilot I think. With my old computer (Intel core duo, 2.4Ghz, 8GMRAM, Dell mobo) I was getting about 25-30 fps until I tried the tricks they recommended, afterwards, I was getting around 45-50 fps....just by manipulating some settings.

David you may get high FPS in the air at cruise but on the ground you aren't. A flight you did from SEA to PDX averaged 17.8 fPS. That would include ORBX I suppose. People get confused and find their highest FPS and say that is what they get. ACARS detects it and is in the log book.

Richie, Sorry, but you're WRONG> Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing: FPS=Frames Per Second...mine is just as high on the ground. I don't know about ACARS, it actually SUCKS in my humble opinion. Its so full of bugs that I have a hard time using it. I don't know how it records FPS either, but Shift-Z tells me I'm getting 80-100 fps all the time. Also, my ACARS flight wasn't using the same aircraft. At the time I got the high FPS, I was in a Flight1 Cessna 172. I have screen shots, and I can clip the text, so I'm confused. High FPS on the ground isn't so important to me, since I spend most of my time flying. Also, the SEA PDX was on the old computer....

The old computer died in 9/2011...I built this one to fly Microsoft Flight, (And of course FSX). In a recent flight I got 45.7 FPS ACARS rating...is that good? My actual indicated FPS was higher. jus for fum, I'm going to turn DOWN all the sliders and see what king of FPS I get then (indicated by shift-z in FSX I'll let you know how it goes.
