So I've decided to trade in my Athlon II X2, 250 for the Phenom II X4, 965 Black Edition.

Going from 3ghz to 3.4.

With the addition of cores and stepping up in speed, I hope to see a marked improvement in FS9.

What do you think?

Changing your CPU will help but what about the other items such as amount of ram and the speed of the ram
And you can not forget about the video card either.
I just recently built a brand new system my old system was a Pentium 4 3.2 gig with 4 gig ram at 600mhz and a AGP video card wiith 256 gb memory.
New system features a ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 Intel Z68 Motherboard - ATX, Intel Z68 Express, Socket H2 (LGA1155), 2200MHz DDR3 (O.C.), SATA 6.0 Gb/s, RAID, 8-CH Audio, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, PCIe 3.0, CrossFireX/SLI, Bluetooth
A Intel Core i7-2700K BX80619i72700K Unlocked Processor - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 3.50 GHz (3.90 GHz Max Turbo), Socket H2 (LGA1155)
A EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti FPB Video Card - 1024MB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), 2x Dual-Link DVI-I, 1x Mini-HDMI, DirectX 11, Dual-Slot, SLI Ready
A Cooler Master RS850-SPHAD3-US Silent Pro Hybrid Power Supply - ATX, Modular, 850 Watt, SLI/CrossFire Ready, 80 Plus Gold Certified, 135mm Silent Fan
and Corsair CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B Vengeance Desktop Memory Module - 4GB, PC3-12800, DDR3-1600MHz, 9-9-9-24 CAS Latency, Intel XMP Ready, Unbuffered
I wanted the 32bit windows 7 for now plan to switch to 64 soon and than I can add up to 32 gig of memory at 2200mhz
For me this was a drastic change and very noticeable difference.

Gary, I've just recently gone up to 8gb of RAM at 1600mhz (max for my board frown ). That made a noticable dif. I'm running off Win7, 64 bit with an NVidia GeForce 210 overclocked to 580mhz

I built a new system this year that has a I5 2500 processor, sabertooth Mobo, 16 gigs of ram, and EVGA GTX 570. FSX is running wide open with everything on high and no issues. But the thing that I think that is really helping is I am using Win7-64. I believe with the extra ram and the ability to use it all that FSX does crap out now because of memory issues. I have flown an entire day on the weekend and not once did the software crash. Where as I used to have to worry about going more than 2 hours before I would get the FATAL Error.

that is a fine processor as for video card almost any video card will offer little improvement over a simple cheap one outside of multi monitor for the most part

So . . .
Now what's the best way to make sure that only FS9 runs on one core and everything else runs on the others?

Why are you using the GeForce 210? do you have space issues that stop you from putting a double slot card in.
If not I would suggest a different card I got mine for $119.00 on sale it regular sells for 139.00.
Because I am using a 32 bit OS I only have the 4 gig ram. My version of FSX will not run on a 64 bit OS. I can not run it maxed out but come close to it.
Check out the link below it might help you with FS9. This is from Simviation Forum's

EVGA Gforce 210, $32.00

18 month old daughter, $400.00 per month
3 year old son, $600.00 per month

Any other questions? wink

The experience gained as a Combat Soldier didn't land me a very good Civillian Infantry job. Trying to make do with what I can, and the 210 gave the best bang for the little buck I had.
