I'm running an 17 2600k SB @ 4.5GHZ, My cpu temps literally never go beyond 53C in any game I've played including FSX and all the addons I have. (temps with FSX are at 38-45C I have a few temperature reading programs to prove) So I was
wondering, Is it safe to clock it further? say 4.7GHZ? because i see a lot of people getting better frames than me with 2500k systems on YouTube. It makes no sense, really. I have a cooler master case with big fans so overheating isn't a problem.

I'm also running Xtreme FSX PC and have used Bojote's fix.

Asrock p67 Extreme 4 board
I7 2600k 4.5GHZ 1.35v HT disabled
16GB RIPJAWS 1900
120GB SSD for windows and FSX
separate 1TB HD for storage.
x2 Radeon 6970 in crossfire 2GB each
1000W ASUS PSU
Cooler Master HAF case

As long as a 24hour+ prime trip shows nothing over i would say 60-65 your perfectly fine. I have seen many go to 5Gz and above i would clock yours at a solid 5Gz just remember to test with prime95 for like a half hour or so every bump to make sure its stable to find where your at.

What about life span? will going to 4.7 do any harm? nevermind temperatures.

the lifespan can or may shorten at high temps, but if your temps stay good then u should be ok...

on a side note it should not kill it within months or anything it may not work in 5 years but by then a i7 will look like a single core

What's a good voltage for 4.8GHZ? And how long should I run Prime 95 to ensure stability?

David,
you already getting a very good average frames rate (40-44) and I'm sure your sim is nice and smooth ...why pushing for more .....doing so you are just shortening your CPU life span

just my. 02 cent!

TVs typically display(ed) at 30fps, and most people were very satisfied. Why go for more? I know everyone wants more, but the fact is that you won't be able to noticeably tell a difference. Now if your fps were dropping below 30, that is a different story. I fly an old computer locked at 15 fps, and that works fine (most of the time).

David, I'm running an AMD-8120 (8 core) overclocked from 3.1 to 4Ghz and have noticed a substantial difference. From what I've read, FSX doesn't leverage multi-core processors as well as it should, hence my need to increase my clock speed to get even close to the performance of an I7 2600k. That said, my processor is liquid cooled and I'm at the edge of stability due to heating of the motherboard's VRMs.

In a nutshell, you have a monster CPU and it looks like it's working quite well already. If it were me, I would re-enable HT and tune up FSX's affinity settings and see where that get's you.

HT hurts flight sim rates from what i have heard and creates heat don't do that

go for about half an hour of prime every time you bump the clock then when ur happy with the temps and stuff leave it on for 24 hours if possible if there are no blue screens or super high heats your good if not you need to bring the clock speed down a little
