Today I had to do a reinstall of Windows 7. It seems every time I move, my computer hates the new place and turns to junk, forcing a reinstall of everything. It's overdue, anyway. I had to open up the case to fix some hardware problems, and all this dust is sitting inside. My house isn't particularly dusty, at least I never notice any dust anywhere, or have adverse physical reactions to it... but it's all built up inside my PC. How do you guys combat this? At some point, I'm going to have to invest in a compressed air canister to remove it all, but for now, I'll just blow out as much as I can.

Buy a cheap air compressor (less than $100) and start blowing out your computer on a monthly basis (use only about 40 psi).

Do you change your furnace filters regularly or is your computer on or near the floor?
To add to what Michael said - a Metro Vac n blo is what I used to use way back in the day when I worked in a call center IT department and we had to clean out computers. It was awesome!

Once I moved my pc on top of my desk the dust was next to none. It was near the baseboard heating ( near, not close) and my house is over 100 years old and dust is constant. Elevating it makes a big difference.

That or a $3 can of dust off... Just make sure to always clean out the dust every 2-3 months and you should be ok. Also be sure the first time you get as much of it out as you can, especially around the case fans and heatsink. As far as preventing an excess of dust build up, elevating the case would help a lot. Also having a slightly positive airflow through the case helps.

I use can air to clean mine out. I have several fans in my case so I turned one at the bottom of the case around to blow out the air. So far this has been the best move. My house also doesn't vent well and I spend a lot of time dusting and using air filters.

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking of a can of air for now. I don't have much I can do in terms of elevating it right now. My case is too big for the spot on my desk it would normally go, but I'm planning on getting a new desk eventually. Maybe I'll steal a milk crate from work temporarily until then.

milk crates work great just make sure your unit is stable. A fall could be catastrophic.

Every three months I open up the case and use a combination of compressed air and vacuuming. I take my Cooler Master Hyper 212 fan off and vacuum the fins and fan using my shop vac micro cleaning set http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Vac-801-89-SHOP-MICRO-CLEANING-Misc/dp/B00002ND4G
