I received an email advertisement this morning from Microcenter with the details on Intel's 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) processors that were released just recently (Q2/2012). The ad prompted me to do a little research, compare and share. Specifically, I was interested in the comparison of the existing i7-2700k (Sandy Bridge) and the new i7-3770k (Ivy Bridge).

Price (Microcenter):
i7-2700k - $279
i7-3770k - $289
- Newegg was a little more expensive at the time of this writing and the 3770k was sold out.

CPU Speed: Both 3.5GHz w/ 3.9Ghz turbo

CPU Core/Threads: 4 core / 8 threads

CPU Cache L2/L3: 4x256KB L2 / 8MB L3

Architecture:
i7-2700k - 32nm Sandy Bridge
i7-3770k - 22nm Ivy Bridge
- More information at the link below:
http://vr-zone.com/articles/ivy-bridge-vs-sandy-bridge--4.8ghz-quad-core-cpu-showdown/15637.html

Power Consumption:
i7-2700k - 95w
i7-3770k - 77w
- Cooler, more efficient power consumption, but for most of us, not a huge difference. However this could be noticeable for those planning to overclock in temperature/power constrained environments. The 3770k is a little more "green" smile

Graphics Core:
i7-2700k - Intel HD Graphics 3000
i7-3770k - Intel HD Graphics 4000
- This may not mean much to most of us. But for those using on-board graphics for FSX, the expected performance jump is about 60%. As I've read, It's like upgrading from a Radeon HD5450 to a 5550.

Memory Bandwidth:
i7-2700k - 21GB/s
i7-3770k - 25.6GB/s
- Again for most of us, I don't expect there to be a very noticeable difference between the two.

Summary:
From the vr-zone.com link above, there are a number of new features and enhancements with the new architecture beyond what I've outlined. Tom's Hardware is reporting on average a 6% performance between the two chips with roughly the same price point.

Personally the timing of this release is appropriate since I plan on migrating from my 3 month old, AMD FX-8120 to an Intel i7. I'd be curious to see if anyone is running the new Intel chips with FSX and what their thoughts are.

Be careful the new i7s are great chips until you overclock them. They get insanely hot after a overclock from all the reviews I have seen. A recommendation from a pretty popular tech guy who did a review them was to get a i7-2700k which is a i7-2600k 32nm chip but is picked out of the lot of 2600ks because they had less flaws and therefor should be able to run a little higher clock with less power and heat.

Just make sure you get a good mother board I got the one mentioned below and used A Intel Core i7-2600K BX80623I72600K Unlocked Processor - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 3.40 GHz (3.80 GHz Max Turbo), Socket H2 (LGA1155), 95W, Fan, Retail

ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 Intel Z68 Motherboard
ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 Intel Z68 Motherboard - ATX, Intel Z68 Express, Socket H2 (LGA1155), 2200MHz DDR3 (O.C.), SATA 6.0 Gb/s, RAID, 8-CH Audio, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, PCIe 3.0, CrossFireX/SLI, Bluetooth
This motherboard has a very user friendly BIOS it allows even the average person to overclock without damaging anything. I for one do not overclock to me it is just not worth it. Overclocking produces more heat and to much is not a good thing.Fried CPU is not something you want.

I agree with Louis. The IB chips get hot real fast and so this generation at least can't be overclocked close to what the i2700k is capable of. Some of the "gurus" over at Avsim who were waiting for IB to upgrade their i2500 or i2600's to IB have instead gone to an i2700k because for FSX it is better.

I just back from Microcenter and picked up the i7-2700k CPU and Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboard which got great reviews on newegg.com. I'll update the thread when I hopefully get the new hardware online tonight with a comparison to my existing FX-8120.

Bill, Yes I'm using a Corsair H60 liquid cooler, although I'm thinking of upgrading that as well.

I started working on the overclock and got to 4.5Ghz fairly easily with temps peaking 70C. Hotter than I'd like, but with a change of thermal compound from a generic to Arctic Ice, I was able to drop the temp down to 60C.

I decided to perform a complete re-install of Windows to start fresh and followed NickN's FSX tuning guide and ended up around 120fps with stock scenery and aircraft. I'm still in the tuning process trying to optimize for my PMDG 738NGX.

So far so good!

Good temps! Look up Kosta's hardware and software guide in the motherboard and cpu section at avsim too. What voltage were you at to get 4.5? Looking good!

Added 3 more fans, setup the H60 in push/pull, and rolled the overclock stable to 4.8Ghz at 1.38v. Temps peak in the mid to high 70's. I also had to force 1666mhz clock on the memory.

Nice overclock. It's better than mine-I have similar temps but slighlty higher voltage at 4.8. How is the fsx experience? 4.8 seems to be the sweetspot.
