Last weekend I was battling a computer virus, alureon. It took me several days, but I finally got everything cleaned up. I thought I was back to normal, but now my video card doesn't want to work. So I come to you, DVA, for your help.

When I start my computer I get an error message box on my desk top that says "Catalyst control center: host has stopped working." I can either click to cancel or let windows search for a suggestion on how to repair it, but it never finds one. Whenever I boot up a game whether it be FSX or anything else, it runs very slowly, crashes or both. My memory usage is typically 45%-50% used when I have a plane sitting idle on a runway while the CPU usage is at 100%. The CPU gets completely maxed out and I cant do anything. I have never experienced this problem before, until after I got the computer virus. I've done mulitiple system scans with many different virus/malware scanners and my pc comes up clean.

I've unistalled the drivers for the video card many times and then reinstalled them and I still suffer the same problem. I also deleted the drivers and then reinstalled them and again, I have the same problem. I'm really not sure what to do next.

System specs:
i5
ATI Radeon HD 6700
8gb memory

Programs I successfully ran with FSX until this problem arose:
FSX
ASE
GEX
REX
PMDG MD-11
ACARS
Track IR

so I got this from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/catalyst-control-centre-host-application-has/0a0ef1b0-117d-43d8-a43f-9b24228b660b?page=3

Go to:

Program Files
ATI
CIM
BIN
ATI Setup

Double click on the ATI Setup. and allow it to run.
It will ask if you want to uninstall/remove/change...whatever..I already forgot! Duh!
Say YES
This will uninstall the ATI SOFTWARE ONLY.....NOT the DRIVERS.

see if that helps also look at the link above has some good answers if anything else is mucked up. they are saying it was due to Win 7 update, not sure though.

I would also recommend running spybot search and destroy. Just to make sure you don't have anything else running that is not wanted in the back ground.

I've run avast, mcaffey, spybot, malwarebytes, stinger, avg and norton several times each and I come up clean.
