I am trying to find the right balance to produce the best frame rates on my PC. My settings aren't all that high, I have no payware aircraft nor scenery. My problem seems to be in external views. The fps aren't that bad in the cockpit, but when I switch to an outside view it gets really glitchy. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Clouds . . . the amount and the amount of 3D clouds you have will effect FPS.

I have weather set to very low with simple clouds. I'm getting a very glitchy 5-15 fps in external view near the ground.

i've used venetubo on a less powerful pc: no improvements.
The only way it's to buy an i7, otherwise i would use fs9: nice and smooth with every machine, with a huge list of free addons

Greg, I run FS9 on a puny Acer Laptop. I was having the same issues as you described and I though it was an all cloud problem. Now what I'm about to say may sound totally crazy, but it worked for me. Have you tried increasing your 3-D cloud percentage and coverage? I was running about 5-15 with the low cloud settings, but I ramped them up to full and now I'm running 15-25, and with a lot less lag. This may vary from FS9 to FSX, I'm not sure. I also downloaded a file from avsim.com that lowered the size of the cumulonimbus cloud texture. I run a ton of payware and it's running like a charm. However, I do not use Squawkbox, because that drains every last drop out of my computer. It's a wild idea, I know, but it just might work.

An i7 is not at all necessary. A good i5, especially if OCd, is more than enough. In his case it sounds like it could be a problem with the GPU, what model do you have? If you are not sure go to run and type in 'dxdiag' and it will tell you under the display tab. Also tell us your CPU & memory.

That is most likely why you are experiencing those issues. You might want to look into getting a discrete GPU, that would increase performance in both internal and external views and probably allow you to have your settings somewhat higher.
