Hi all,

I am absolutely fed up with my NVIDIA GTX 460 because of its Kernel Mode Driver crashes, and the intermittent BSODs (System_Service_Exception) and like. I am considering this new card:

Will this be good for FSX?

7850 is better. Lower power consumption and better performance. The HIS IceQ 7850 is very good and a little cheaper. I have the 7850 and it works very well with everything, including the newest games out there on high/ultra settings.

See here, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=510 the 7850 beats the 6950 pretty much everywhere. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150608&cm_mmc=Semi%20Annual%20Sale%20%2712-_-48-_-N82E16814150608&nm_mc=Semi%20Annual%20Sale%20%2712 $219

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161405 $245 (I got it for $225 a couple weeks ago)

Problem is I only have PCIe 2.0x16. Will these cards work (and if they do, will max performance on the card be compromised)?

Yes they will work and performance will not be compromised as no current-generation cards exceed the bandwidth limits of 2.0, really. 3.0 will really not make any kind of a difference until several years from now with future generation cards. Right now it's just a marketing ploy.

See here http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/350553-33-pcie-motherboard-pcie-graphics-card

Much like harddrives (HDDs not SDDs) are marketed as SATA III compliant but no HDD comes anywhere close to the SATA II limit, so HDD SATA II vs. HDD SATA III makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. For SDD Sata III DOES make a difference as the access speeds are much faster.

Thanks! And how does FSX perform on your system with this card?

Performs very well but FSX is much more CPU than GPU intensive. No problems, though.

Cool! So I'm running AMD Phenom x2 1090T at 3.9 Ghz on each core with the 7850. I'm hoping to get good performance, right?

Do you mean the AMD Phenom X6 1090T? I'm not familiar with the X2. I am running an Intel i7 3770 (not overclockable) at 3.4 Ghz (up to 3.9 Ghz with Turbo) and the 7850. With the NGX in a high density area with full AI traffic (Ultimate Traffic 2) with Manhattan X, I get ~15 FPS which is still flyable. With the NGX in a less dense area I get 20-30 FPS (locked), pretty much 30 FPS everywhere else as where. All graphics settings up highest except for Autogen which is set to Dense.

AMD Processors are not as powerful as intel processors generally but you have quite a nice overclock going there, so coupled with a 7850 I would say you would get performance in the vicinity or slight less of what I'm getting. I don't have very many complaints.

Funny...I want to get rid of my ATI 5850 and go back to Nvidia because my screen flashes to black every so often and it is the driver that causes it on the newer widescreen monitors. I was strictly a Nvidia buyer for years and just went back to ATI two years ago.

Hmmm. Maybe this is something that happens with many high end cards.
