Hey all,

I am moving halfway across the county in about one week. I need to make sure that my computer does not get damaged in the process. Some items that are prone to damage and damaging the computer are a 10 inch long GTX 460 and a Hyper 212 cooler. I do not. Have any water cooling. How can I tell my packers to pack the computer safely?

Thanks,

Naren

You don't ....you pack your own computer. Lots of bubble wrap all the way around. Double check every screw inside is tightened down. And then just be careful where you put it. smile

I recently moved from Las Vegas to Missouri. My computer was fine.

Whenever I've moved, I took my computer with me instead of letting the movers take it... That's not always convenient, so at the very least, back up everything on a USB external drive and take that separately, just in case something gets lost or damaged

It's a legitimate concern. As long as all parts are securily fastened (scres tight etc) and the computer is properly packed. There should be little concern for damage. I sure wouldnt be haulin my Coolermaster 944 across country. Would take up 1/2 a truck. smile

last time I moved several states I put packing peanuts inside the computer to keep parts from bouncing around (I thought at first was over kill). Then put the computer in my back seat and seat belt it in.

I would not advise using packing peanuts inside your computer unless they are the anti-static kind. regular packaging peanuts could cause static discharge which could damage components. Just make sure everything is tight, and well padded and you will be fine.
Or just remove the hard drives and pack them separate to travel with you, anti-static bags are your friend. Good luck with your move.

Anyone remember the days when hard drives simply dropped the head on the disc wherever they stopped? You didnt move them without parking the head or you would destroy the 5mb HDD smile Modern HDD park the head securely.

Thanks for all the input! However, this is an insured move and we're not allowed to pack anything on our own -.- . So I'm planning to buy a bunch of antistatic bags and put my GPU and HDD in them. I'll also remove the CPU cooler and clean off all the grease. However, I'm assuming I'll have to rely on the movers to safely get the rest of my 28 ish pound setup safely to Houston. And you know how bad the roads in Southern California are, so my computer may end up flying a bit. I guess I could tell them to wrap it in extreme bubble wrap, but I don't think I can do much else. LOL.

Hey Naren, good luck on your move. I would also take the computer with me, but what type of move is an "insured" move that you are not allowed to take any of your belongings? Just curious. Again, good luck. wink

We are allowed to take some belongings, but whatever's going in the truck has to be packed by the professional packing people. Thanks Jay! I wish I could take the computer with me on the plane but I think that would do it more damage than putting it in the truck on the bad Socal roads wink

Well, computers, monitors, etc. gets shipped UPS and FedEx all the time, so I would think insured movers would do a safe job.

Naren, I was a professional mover prior to joining the Marines, and I can tell you that 99.99% of the time the movers will do an outstanding job packing your things. Just tell the crew chief that you're concerned about your computer because its a custom rig and you put alot of time and effort into it. And they will make sure to take extra care of it.
