I just bought a new computer today and I am getting ready to instal FSX. I have done a little research and found that most people say to install it just under the /c dive and to turn off User Account Control. I would just like a little guidance over this. Thanks.

Installing FSX in it's own folder has debatable effects. I installed mine under the default path and it runs just fine. For UAC, go to Control Panel > System Security > Change UAC settings > Never notify.

Some people say that installing FSX in it's own folder improves performance.

I don't think there's any performance increase - only that putting it under Program Files increases the likelihood of old addons running afoul of UAC; and I don't want to turn off UAC. Well-behaved programs should be able to run without admin access. ACARS certainly can.

Cheers!

I followed Nick Needham's guide to the T and it works very well. I'm using a separate drive for FSX though, which might (or might not) provide an impact in frame rates. I could see it being a possibility due to the way it is defrag'ed vs the SSD that I'm running my OS off of (which does not get defrag'ed)

I have been taking time off from flying to work on my Robot. I have been learning to program using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. I am using C# but it will also program in C++. Learning this stuff has opened my eyes to the inter operations of FSX and my payware aircraft. My point here is that I now know what the DLL's and xml files do, what memory they hit, and how it is called. I even modified (don't tell on me) some of the files to gain better performance. I don't recommend it for everybody but if you want a close personal look at the inner workings of FSX, and the aircraft files, Microsoft will give you a copy of Visual Studio 2010 lite for free. Just go to the Microsoft Robotics Development Studio web site and download it. The manual is a rather large document so pick and choose what you want to use. It's better to print the stuff out then try to use it and have the GUI open at the same time. Like I said .... this isn't for everybody but some folks may find it interesting.

It has nouthing to do with how it "Runs". It has much to do with how it plays with addons. 1000 people may not have an issue but if your one of the ten that do you would understand why. Its the computer thing! Most if not all developers highly recommend NOT installing in a UAC controlled file, programs. Specially in a networked enviroment running simconnect or WideFS. Now theses people arent stupid

I have win7x64 and run FS9 and FSX with no problems. No need to turn off UAC either. I do run in admin mode tho. Installed in default folder.
