Hi all. Just a quick question on airline routes. Sometimes when I'm searching routes, I run into routes that are somewhere along the lines of "J4 PTB J4 EFG J4 DSR"...yeah, I know those are probably not correct VOR's, I'm on my phone and am being lazy. Anyway, my question is why wouldn't they just condense that down to "PTB J4 DSR"?

Based on what I know, it should be PTB J4 DSR. However, I have seen some dispatch routes in our database which contain multiple waypoints or navaids along the same airway.

It's the same thing. You could condense it if you like.

Normally you are correct. You are required by the faa to identify the start point the v route highway you are on, then the nav aid that is the end of the route. If the route you are on and it registrar left or right like a dog leg and you want to skip that portion, then you would add the additional nav aids to show where you reentered the route.

I believe that it is done when crossing an ARTCC boundary -- there was (might still be) something in the AIM about having at least 1 fix in every ARTCC that you will traverse. I think it helped with issues with the center HOST computer. I do not think it's actually an issue anymore, and the route can be condensed.

Generally speaking, you would file the condensed route. ATC might pull it apart for the reasons Jim McMannamy suggested, but you wouldn't see that in the RW. It might also be pulled apart if there are step climbs/descents along the route. Those climbs and descents might not be showing in the route info you're seeing.
