in the device status it says that it is working properly also i could of missed out on a wire that would mean that the network options may not work first time build so not totally sure though

If it's a wireless card (assuming this is a tower?) you shouldn't need to run any wires, it will draw its power from the motherboard. If it says it's okay in the device manager then I would start troubleshooting the router and then the modem. Do you have any other devices that are able to connect? Other computers, tables, phones, etc.?

Is the operating system stable? You can try to plug a LAN cable into the motherboard adapter and run updates or d/l the latest software for that device. Did Windows install the driver or did you use a disc that came with the card?

Does your network appear in the list of available connections?

Well unless you're computer has a wireless adapter (USB) or a Wifi card that plugs into the motherboard (PCI) you don't have wifi. AFAIK there are no motherboards out there that have built in wifi.

Sorry, I was confused I thought you already had a wireless card installed.

You can get a wireless adapter pretty cheap these days. Here's a site I use to shop around, and it's usually cheaper than you can find at a local shop if you're willing to wait a few days for it to get there.

http://www.pricewatch.com/networking/

One thing to note, and if you're tech savvy then I apologize in advance. If you're not too sure, then watch out. If your router is 802.11b/g, don't buy an adapter for 802.11n unless it specifies that it is backwards compatible. Backwards compatibility router-side is fine, in other words if your router is n, then you can still use a g card, but it doesn't work going the other way. 802.11b is pretty much antiquated and not used very much anymore. Just be sure of the framework your router supports before you go shopping. If you're not sure, post it here and we can tell you what you need.

802.11 is just the wireless framework. It's the standard for wireless networking as maintiained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). You can read the history of it, but basically the N band is the latest in its development supporting over 100MB/s data speeds. The G band supports up to 54 MB/s.

The modem is a voice over IP (VoIP) modem, but isn't wireless. Some cable modems are sual purpose, serving both as modems and routers. Do you currently have a wireless router attached to it? If so, what's the model of that router?

what type of wireless router do you have? I would get a N router that will work with G also.

Okay then you can buy any wireless N adapter. You can technically use a G adapter, but your bandwith will be reduced. To take advantage of the full speed capability of the router, be sure to get a wireless N card.

I personally prefer an internal card over USB devices. Send me an email and I can discuss specific products and recommendations with you in private.
