Being a somewhat untrained eye, could somebody please advise how FSX would run on a pc of this size, bear in mind in time it will have many add-ons, inc PMDG 747 and in time the 777 when it is built, dont worry to much about price as I'm ok wih spending big if it's going to give me much enjoyment

I was going to use 16GB of ram, is that too much then, from the research I've been doing over the past few months it would appear as though the CPU is vital, hence why I want it up at 4.6GHZ, also I assume the strength of the graphics card only apllies if I want multiple monitors(one large sized screen will be enough)

ok Jamie i have built a pc yes 16gb is too much and cpu is very important for fsx i have gone and got a 660Ti but i may start playing other games in the future so that is why i got it but like Rob said you should switch to the 660Ti as you want to make your pc future proof that gpu i believe is quite old now also you might want to bump the cooler up to a H80 or H100 for better cooling

Robert, might be easier if I say what I'd like and maybe you could point me to what I need to achieve it, basically I can spend fairly big so in a nutshell I'm looking for something that is as strong as can be, so that it will run like a television/ as if I'm in the cockpit for real, youtube clips I've seen of pcs overclocked at 5.0GHZ seem to be so smooth and crystal clear as far as the graphics go.

Basically I'd like to know what do I need to make it as strong as possible, I really appreciate you taking the time to help, to me this is a big decision and I want to get it just right

To get the settings to be as smooth as this regardless of what add=ons I have, do I simply follow the specs that he has identified in the description box,

Thanks Dan for that, it is not easy when you are a fussy guy LOL, out of interest then how does your FSX run, I'd like a good FPS hit regardless of where I land/takeoff and with however many addons I choose to have, also I'd imagine that when the PMDG 777 comes out it will require a big pc to handle it

Go for this:

Intel SB i5-2500k
GeForce 660ti or better
4GB of DDR3 1600mhz or better (8gb is becoming the norm now but not totally necessary)
a good cooling solution for the cpu, such as a Coolermaster 212+, or a Corsair h60 or similar
a good 650w or more power supply (corsair, toughpower, etc)

i have a 2600k @ 4.5ghz daily - it however can run stable at 4.9ghz at around 1.376v (i use hyperthreading a lot for video rendering, photoshop processing, etc), a gtx 680 FTW+ edition, 8gb ddr3 1600mhz, 1200w corsair ax1200 psu, and here is a video of mine (with a former gtx 580)

Can you get a pc permanantly overclocked or do you have to do it yourself each time you use it

Also Robert, I notice in your logbook you are getting averages of 60 FPS with your FSX, are you using V Cpckpits and do you have many addons, if so what specs do you have

The specs I'm seeing at the site I'm looking are

i 3770k 3.5GHZ oc @ 4.6 max
ASUS;P8Z77-V PCI-E 3.0 READY WIFI SLI CROSSFIRE X
8GB KINGSTON HYPERX BEAST DUAL DDR3 2400MHZ X.M.P (2x 4 GB kit)
2 GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 660 ti 2 DVI HDMI DP - 3D VISION READY
240GB Intel @ 335 SSD series SATA 6 gb/s upto 500mb/s r 450 MBs/W 1st hard disk
120GB Intel @ 520 SSD series SATA 6 GB/s upto 550 MB/SR 520 MB/sW 2n Hard disk
Corsair 100 High performance CPU cooler

Should I add the SSD cache drive to that aswell,

Surely these specs must be pretty good

When I built my first PC - it took me 3 hours.. it was fun! but to answer your question, i would get ONE SSD for OS and whatnot, and get a regular mechanical drive for FSX and games.. and use the savings towards maybe even a GTX 670? That would be the most beneficial move. Otherwise it's a solid setup.

Jamie, I use almost exclusively Virtual Cockpits, I hate the 2D! I also probably have too many addons which would include but are not limited to: PMDG MD-11, 744, NGX, Level-D, QW, etc. Many Aerosoft Sceneries, FlyTampa, etc.

My specs are as follows:

Intel Core i5 2400 @ 3.10Ghz
4GB DDR3 1333Mhz Ram
Nvidia GTX 460 1GB OC
3x Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD's
1x Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD
Gigabyte Odin 585W PSU

That pretty much sums it up.

Rob, pretty much how I like to operate, I will be starting all over again moreorless with the conversion to FSX, however I will be moving back to the 747 as I can then resume as a 747 captain, mainly flying KLM routes, so as far as addons airport wise I'll probably just get the ones that the KLM 747/777 fly into,

It is pretty much going to be a cockpit pc, therefore only used for flight sim,I plan on keeping my original pc for other purposes such as a virtual flight dispatch office and other computer usage, in flight entertainment as such seeing as I'm very much into long haul routes, thanks for your input though I'm closing in now it's just a case of taking the plunge
