ok, so my 6 year old system is starting to fail. Time to invest in a new one. Heck, my mobo manufacturer is out of business...LOL. Shopping New Egg, and this is what I've come up with so far:

-ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

-Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX ( think 8 gig is plenty)

-Intel Core i5-3570 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX80637i53570

-ARCTIC Freezer 13 with 92mm PWM Fan

-CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

-Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for OS only, my older mechanical drives will run FS

-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

Thoughts? Am I missing anything?

Thats a system worth of some respect Mr. Keechbert! I haven't upgraded yet but its on my long term list.

Everything i read about running FSX in all of its glory recommends i7 intel or better. Not sure of the increase in price for that. You might also consider a 16GB video card.

Just my uneducated 2 cents.

I just received an amazon gift card so I'm going for the Saitek Pro Throttle/Yoke combo and possibly the Saitek trim wheel if I can swing it. Not enough dough to build my dream system quite yet so I'll start with small upgrades.

I would go faster RAM since it dosen't cost that much more and a half decent nvidia video card will help with clouds and screen redraws. An SSD for FSX is not necessary but it sure makes it smooth. That system is going to rock!

The I7 is about 100 more, depending on the power you want. I've seen i5s that can rock FSX as well. About the video card..hehe, my EVGA 560 ti died on me yesterday. Only 9 months old and it overheats (no OCing)in minutes fans spin high and black screen. I put in my old ATI (really old) and it works fine. Just not my 560ti. My guess is a bad thermal paste or cracked chip. Anyway, I've requested an RMA (as it should be under warranty) but since I didn't register (at least I don't think I did) within 30 days, I may be up a certain creek without a paddle. I'll know more after they review my RMA. Right now we are talking around 800 for this build, more if I have to get a new card :(.

Bill, what speed ram would you recommend?

David, I'd go with the 2133 or even 2400. Your MB and CPU have the bandwith to support that speed. Get the 3570k not the 3570 so you can overclock a bit. FSX is CPU bound so even a mild overclock to 4.3 will give a nice boost to FPS.

about the same setup I have but I have the 3570k The I7 is nice but still FSX is only dual core compatible. so getting a I5 I will be fine try stick with 3.5 or higher.

With Ram try getting higher speed. as to again FSX will only recognize 4gb anyways. now getting 8 will help with out side programs as well look into a higher speed I believe that mobo can handle it

You might want to think about Liquid Cooler for CPU, I have one and it rocks, almost the best 60 bucks I have spent. Works great for Overclocking

How is it starting to fail? I bought this Dell 4600 I use daily in December 2003 and it runs well with 2 gig memory. I am not being a smart guy here I would just be interested in how to know if my computer is starting to fail. So far it continues to run flawlessly. When is it time to get rid of it and spend another 1000 dollars or so? Liquid coolers and overclocks? I need liquid coolers and overclocks?

well if its running fine then its not starting to fail. David might have a hard drive issues it already seems like the video card is dead. once things start failing you can either replace them, or in David's case since it is six year old do a complete upgrade

exactly. EVGA has approved my RMA so my 560ti will be shipped off tomorrow. To be honest, I do not plan on doing much in the way of overclocking. I think I'm going to take the sensible approach and start piece by piece as they go on sale. Funny thing is, according to ASROCK's website of approved RAM, New Egg is either sold out or not carrying anymore...hm.

I don't ever overclock my system either with prices the way they are I want my system to last me some time. and if something was to go wrong then well I be back to square one, most places wont value the return policy if things like overclocking are preformed.
