If I just purchased a Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo), and I am not planning on overclocking this in a new rig built for fsx, will the stock cooling unit that comes with it be adequate for my needs?

Of course ...Intel wouldn't sell you a heatsink/fan that couldn't do the job smile

Well that makes sense smile How do I know if I will need additional cooling fans for the entire rig? I think I have a pretty good case, but is there a way to know objectively?

I wouldn't worry about it too much since you are not overclocking. Two or three fans will be just fine. All those fancy rigs that have 10 fans is just for show.

Depending how dusty the space where the computer will be you will want to open the case every couple months and gently blow out all the dust from the cooling fins.

Just bought the same CPU and when enabled overclocking via BIOS I had a few crashes. Put it back to normal and no issues. I haven't had a chance to test further (just built the rig Saturday) so I don't know if this is a cooling issue or not.

Also, I have been seeing 20 fps under all conditions with this, 8gb of RAM. No graphics card yet.

ok, so i wont overclock, as i am not sure i really need it. the case has a few fans that are massive (2 x 230mm and 2 x 180mm) so i will just assume its all i need. thanks for the input. my first build so i want to make sure everything is the right way.

That's two more fans than I was running on mine. Note that I'm not sure that the issue was coolong or not. You're probably fine. You can that extra power for Addons.

It really depends on your case. The intel cooler will be fine. Hopefully your case has at least a couple fans to pull/push air through. Download some free software to monitor CPU temps. CPU-Z is good as well as Speedfan. Make changes depending on what you see and how your system is acting.

"Of course ...Intel wouldn't sell you a heatsink/fan that couldn't do the job"

I'm sorry, but on that particular chip, yes, Intel would sell you something you don't really need.
